Roglic would have the joint record for Vuelta wins if he wins BTW.

Definitely a mistake from Jumbo, surely it would have made more sense for Roglic to go for the win and have Vingegaard stay back to help Kuss. It’s clear they don’t feel any obligation to Kuss which goes against what usually happens when a rider is in the leader’s jersey. I guess it’s an unusual situation as it’s not normal to have two other team riders so close to the leader on time, but they’re rapidly losing fans now |

Well what a stage, what unpleasant drama that benefits neither Rog or Vinge. I thought Landa gifted Kuss third at the end, seemed a small hand gesture that wasn’t replayed, could be wrong, but he certainly helped drag him back into it. Tomorrow far less steep, they should let the break go, but could JV implied under the weight of their own egos?

"Roglič has already won three editions of the Vuelta, and this year's Giro d'Italia; Vingegaard is the defending two-time Tour de France champion. Kuss has been the dream domestique for the pair in their Grand Tour triumphs, and yet it seems they are all too ready to piss on his chips, rather than pay him back handsomely. To add to the confusion - if it isn't clear, I'm confused - Vingegaard stressed post-stage that he would "love" to see Kuss win the Vuelta. Well, why do you keep taking time on him then, Jonas?" Sums it up pretty nicely. Courtesy of Cycling Weekly (or cycling weakly, which is what I do ). |

I was quite surprised how harsh the analysis was from the Breakaway team, and indeed from almost every other cycling journalist. TJV need to have sounds tactics today to redeem themselves a bit

Maybe they are seeing what I'm seeing. A rather unedifying display of "I know you've done a massive amount for us over the years and I know that it's likely to be one of your best chances to win a grand tour, but f**k you". Not a good look IMO. |

It seems pretty universal. Millar, Kelly, Horner all pretty much saying the same thing. Dan Lloyd and Sean Kelly seemed angry at the situation, and watching it play out was very disconcerting. I’m a massive Roglic fan and wanted him to win overall before the race started, but I’m really disappointed and from reading comments many feel the same. If Vingegaard hadn’t followed yesterday that would have been better, even possibly fine as Roglic would have gained time on his rivals, but with Kuss still fairly comfortably in Red. But then hearing Roglic’s comments at the end saying he’s there to race left a very bad taste I think if Vingegaard had eased a bit it would have looked and felt very different, but he looked back, saw Kuss struggling, and chose to stay on Roglic’s wheel. I would love to know what Kuss said on the radio. Did he say ‘guys, I am cracking, slow down’, or did he say ‘guys, I’m cracking, don’t wait up’? Either way I think the management should be leading here. And it’s not about ‘gifting’ it to Kuss. It’s about protecting the jersey. I know Kuss was ‘lucky’ to gain so much time on that stage which was Quickstep’s own fault, and as GCN pointed out, neither Roglic or Vingegaard would have been allowed that far up the road that day. But Kuss is in the red jersey. His teammates shouldn’t be attacking him, when they pretty much have 1-2-3 wrapped up on GC. |

larkim you've changed your tune from they should be on dom duties, lol. My point at the time was how TJV responded to having Kuss in the lead with Remco being the main opposition. Since he crumbled away as a GC threat, that shifted to being more of a query - how should TJV play the hand, and how much would the personal ambitions of their two highly paid non-doms thwart the heart-warming story of Kuss vs the traditions of the sport respecting the jersey etc. There are so many motivations that we really don't know but could hypothesise about:- - Did JV ride to slow PR yesterday? He didn't help, certainly? Did this help Kuss (was it intentionally to help Kuss?) - How happy really was Kuss to relinquish the jersey (he said in interviews he thought he'd lost it) - Is there some agreement in the team that after stage X whatever the position is they'll hold station? Or is it really a free for all? - How much did JV know on Tuesday about the impact of his attack on the overall GC? Did he deliberately ride to avoid taking the jersey, or did he try and fail (with the added motivation about his friend)? The problem TJV have is that on the one hand they win themselves public relations points by letting Kuss win - we all love an underdog story, and Kuss seems a genuinely nice guy. But if they come out and say that, does that risk others being able to use that strategy against them (if they get it right)? And would it smack of complacency? It's certainly made the race interesting through the rest of this week though. I wonder if there'd be as much intrigue if (say) JV was sitting in red with PR and SK 1m30 behind. Would we be wondering if PR could mount an attack, or would we simply accept that PR and SK would be riding for their leader for the rest of the week and keeping things "boring"? |
