Angliru tomorrow decides it I feel. Can Kuss stay with Vingegaard and Roglic?

If they leave it to the other teams then Kuss likely wins. Sepp Kuss: We shouldn't think of Vuelta a España as a competition between us cyclingnews.com |

I see it like this. JV was allowed to go to take the win for Van Hooydonck. Roglic and Kuss expected other teams to chase but they didn’t do the gap was a bit larger than expected, but it puts JV into a good position to take over red if Kuss fails. Kuss perhaps also saving legs for the Angliru, if he wins tomorrow (or T asjes more time) there can be no doubt he deserves red. Jumbo have proved that they know what they’re doing with the tactics, even if they’re not classic, and also perhaps because they are less predictable. |

I'm happy with the rationale they have given for what happened yesterday, and Kuss's comments about not wanting the race as a "present" are correct. What's more interesting now is that 29s is a very small margin; with bonus seconds too, it's not impossible for Kuss to have a 99.9% good day and still lose the lead to Vingegaard almost "accidentally". And if Vingegaard is just a little bit better than Kuss on a stage (which on overall "talent" shouldn't surprise anyone) that could very well happen today. Vingegaard would deserve the win of course, and I get the impression based on yesterday that if he didn't win the overall race it now would be because he was gifting it to Kuss; does anyone really doubt he's got the capacity to put 29s into Kuss if he really wants to? |

I’m more surprised that Vingegaard is the stronger out of him and Roglic. I was expecting him to turn domestique.

Yes, me too after the Tourmalet - he looked spent in a way which "stage winners" often look like, whereas "stage winners who are also GT likely winners" often appear to have a little left in the tank.

Vingegaard was sick in week 1. I'd say Tourmalet suited Vingegaard but certainly up to the TT Roglic was stronger. It definitely seems like Vingegaard is getting better but the gap yesterday was because the others behind didn't bother limiting it (looking at UAE mainly).

Yes, either they didn't bother or couldn't. I think Kuss said the attack by JV was perfectly timed when everyone else was at their limit. Hadn't clocked he was sick, just assumed he was below par due to coming in off the back of the TdF victory, and planning to "build" in the three weeks. If the TJV tribe really are happy with any one of three winning, today should be the decider I'd guess? Though Thursday also has a punchy finish which could be more of an issue after a difficult Tuesday and Wednesday. Even Saturday has the potential to be challenging if TJV have to work to resolve an ambitious attack from someone just outside of the top 3. |

I don't know if this is a valid thought or not, so please shoot me down vigorously if this is way off beam (and first and foremost, I really, really do hope Van Hooydonck recovers, and I really do not believe the first response for anyone should be "doper") but is it possible that his sudden cardiac arrest just a few days after riding "fine" in the ToB could generate some accusations that such a health turnaround is an indicator of some form of doping? I am well aware that sudden, unexpected cardiac issues in young, otherwise healthy men is a serious issue and is mostly utterly unconnected to anything suspicious - as Ross Tucker has said previously, the first indication of a health concern is often the incident itself and may be utterly unpredictable. I fully expect that that is the situation with Nathan, but will others be similarly unsuspicious? |
