I was also hoping there was some souvenir footage/photos for Jay Vine. What a great ride and then but you see him cross the line!

All very exciting in the GC which is great.

Fred Wright in the breakaway again today... perhaps today could be his day??

And Evenepoel isn't Cancellara, he's always been talked about in GC terms since before he went over next the bridge on the descent in the Giro, Cancellara never was to my mind?

You used a race that isn't a GT indicator as the reason that he was a GT candidate, Cancellera and Boonen are joint record holders at that race. If you're saying Evenepoel isn't Cancellara or Boonen then you're saying that race isn't the evidence.

In any case, like I said, I think you must mean another race...

Actually Evenepoel hasn't even started Flanders so you have to mean a different race...

There are a few interesting questions about Remco left outstanding.

His GC reputation developed in his junior days, due to his ability to ride others off his wheel with a very strong sustained pace, which suited yesterday. He also has good history in the Basque country with wins at San Sebastian.

He's historically had slightly less prominence on shorter steeper climbs, but who knows how that's developed. A comment from Vaughters a couple of years ago suggests this in part due to being very aero, rather than epic power. He may not have the punch, but maybe he doesn't need it if he's able to manage his emotions and not follow unnecessarily.

There is also the question of is there is any remaining fear from his Lombardi's crash - could he be put under pressure there and make a mistake?

I can definitely see him as able to win a GT, but it's dealing with the pressure as favourite that may be more a challenge than his physical ability.

Yeah my mistake, It's LBL he rode off the front at 30km from a top group, including WVA. It's a 254km race so it's a reasonable indicator. There are classics men who are simply no good/not interested in grand Tours, and vice versa. However he repeated his trick at San Sebastian classic, where and rode away from Yates.

Separately, Fred Wright failed yet again to capitalise, so close, beaten just on the line again!

LBL is lumpy, it shows he's a good climber. Classics are always a good length though, it's part of what makes it a classic. Have a look at the two winners before him as well. That said if those two past winners had been there, riding away from them would have really set the cat amongst the pigeons.

And the previous two winners of LBL were Pogacar and Roglic. Yeah I don't normally watch LBL, and do watch Flanders, but this year was other way around, hence my confusion.

Anyway even I'm not convinced Evenepoel will last. I think Saturday/Sunday's stages will be interesting, the Sunday stage has a prolonged 13% climb finish which won't suit him. Tomorrow's starts with a climb, so Quickstep might get exploded at the beginning, Serry and Cavagna were off the back quite early today. So plenty of time for Mas to finally capitalise or for Roglic to show his experience... But I think we can count Carapaz out. Apart from that, who knows?

It will be interesting to see for sure. I didn't see him as a junior but know he has been discussed as a GT guy from there so what MudMeanderer said is interesting.

Definitely want to see how he goes at altitude in the last week as well.
