I suppose there's also still the question of whether Evenepoel will last 3 weeks. The thing is he didn't attack, just rode a fast tempo.

Hard to see but CN reporting Carapaz and Hindley not in the Roglic group. Evenepoel gained about 90 secs? |

Long day away from the cycling yesterday.... was beginning to doubt my Evenepoel pick. but no I'm not doubting it any more :-). Although it's not rocket science, anyone who can ride away from a group of faves like he did at the Tour of Flanders looks like a champion in waiting of some bigger and longer things. Can he win a 3 week event? Who knows, but at least it gives us a competitive and unpredictable Vuelta. And kudos to the Zwift champ Vine - my word, he is good.

Often after very wet days like yesterday there are a small handful of riders who really don't recover well, compared to the usual sunny days in the Pyrenees / Alps. Wonder who will be affected (if anyone)? Hope Vine got a good souvenir photo of his victory; the TV cameras were really exposed as being rubbish in that sort of weather, or maybe it really was that poor visibility in the clouds. |

I’m on free fall on the fetch league but I’m enjoying the Vuelta. What a story for Jay Vine!

I wonder if Carlton has his store of puns written in advance for every new rider that wins a stage. Vine was a bit of a gift for him though (less so for the rest of us who had to listen to his various wine / vineyard puns as he came towards the finish!).

Chrisull sorry being right and the reason are two different things. Was Cancellara ever even a threat in a GT? How about the other Flanders winners? Flanders has never been an indication of GT potential. People thought Evenepoel had GT potential because of other stuff he's done.

Actually you mean another race as he's never won Flanders (I did wonder why I didn't remember that)...

GCN yesterday made the point that Remco has only ever (professionally) targetted two things with team support - LBL and this Vuelta. 1 down, 1 to go? He definitely out-rode some pretty talented GC riders yesterday; whether that means they are better at pacing a 3 week tour than he is and he's gone in too deep already we'll only know later in the event. |

Evenepoel has shown talent for sure and I watched his ride yesterday and it looked like someone riding threshold, he didn't 'attack' to get his gap. He almost looked like a dom for Mas setting a tempo that burnt all his rivals off, lol. The question is about how he lasts for three weeks, but he's obviously put in the work to come here in decent shape. |
