My initial response was, "Eh? It causes sedation, impaired thinking and vomiting, that's not a lot of use to a cyclist." But if someone gets enduring pain relief and if the CNS side effects include disinhibition of the feedback loops that make riders sit up and go backwards rather than pushing on till they drop dead it could be regarded as performance enhancing.

USADA article here: usada.org has some interesting quotes from Taylor Phinney, not least this one: “You see so many late-race stupid crashes that I almost wouldn’t be surprised if some or most of those crashes are caused by people taking these hard-hitting painkillers at the end of races.” |

Horner’s argument was that no amount of Tramadol would artificially increase a person’s performance above what they would be naturally capable of, but it would enable them to ride longer into a race, rather than potentially DNFing. Is there a reason the UCI and WADA rules are different for this particular drug? |

UCI say it is dangerous for the rider themselves and to other riders around them due to the potential side effects - riding at high speeds cm's apart requires full attention after all. WADA is only interested in the PED side of thing

Thanks. I just googled it after my last post and WADA are apparently doing a study on Tramadol. wada-ama.org |

On the Vuelta, I see Roglic is now a massive fave with the bookies with his late entry. Must admit, not totally convinced, but we will see.

If Roglic is fit it's a no brainer. His palmares speaks for itself. We're talking about a rider that put Pogacar under pressure while injured. The only question is injury recovery and how much fitness he's lost. |

Yep - if he's fit, but Le Tour wasn't that long ago, the calendar is very demanding - injured riders do make it back from the Tour to do well at the Vuelta, he's done that himself before, but he wasn't looking quite right before the crash. Must admit Evenepoel is looking like the next Pogacar/Vingegoord to me, the Tour of Flanders win was exceptional - you simply don't ride off the front and stay off the front unless you are a massive talent and heard he was doing similar at San Sebastian. Perhaps a year too early, but Pogacar served very strong notice at the Vuelta a few seasons back didn't he, before crushing people at the Tour? |

For Velogames, I’m not sure whether to load up with potential favourites and then fill the rest of the team with 4-pointers, or try and be more balanced! I follow the sport fairly closely, but a lot of the 4-pointers I’ve never heard of…

"but he wasn't looking quite right before the crash." This is pure conjecture on your part and referring to a point where he was ahead of Pogacar and Thomas with only Vingegaard, Yates and WVA ahead of him. The crash was stage 5. Anyway he put pressure on Pogacar AFTER the crash and was third strongest ahead of Thomas on a stage after the crash. Also are you Evenepoel may be the next GT guy but Flanders isn't a one week race, let alone a GT. |
