Apparently if you view the map from the US, it just reads "Gulf of America", the view I posted is the UK view, but if you view from Mexico it remains as "Gulf of Mexico". I would expect that google adheres to a coherent set of rules about naming conventions which deals with conflicts of names between countries including language choices etc. It will have had to come up with this stuff already because of issues over disputed territories all around the world. Apple maps, bing maps, they'll all sort this out. The really interesting bit will be when the next administration gets in and whether they take the active choice to revert or the passive one to leave it be. |

Nah they've made it easy by reverting to the colonial names elsewhere. Denali -> Mount McKinley. Even the republican senator cried foul in Alaska, saying Denali is what the locals and indigenous people both call it and both want it called. They will change back. (unless after 2028 we're into an authoritarian dictatoship in the US). |

Denali / indigenous names I can see. But it's a brave President that removes "America" from a naming. We shall see.

I was going to remark about Denali. It's still simply Denali on Google Maps here. I don't know what the official position is nor what it says on Google Maps in the US. Even Eryri has Snowdon in brackets, certainly on some of the labels. Whereas Turkey is Türkiye no brackets, despite that being probably more the Turkish name rather than a common British language name. I'm really not convinced there always is some consistency. |

The UK central mapping database of names is only getting updated this year to convert "Snowdonia" to "Eryri". I was in touch with the civil servants about that a few weeks ago, being a nerd on this sort of thing.

There's a power to be gained in naming things. Pretty certain that there will shortly be a few places/things taking the Trump name, "Because the people love the best president ever, me." An aircraft carrier here, a military base there, a mountain over here. S'all good, man. |

Executive Order, 20th January: With respect to all applications for naming and renaming submitted to the newly constituted Board, the Board shall advance the policy established in section 1 of this order to honor the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans and may update its principles, policies, and procedures as needed to achieve this policy... ...Additional Action. The Secretary of Interior may solicit public and intergovernmental input regarding additional patriots to honor, particularly in light of America’s semiquincentennial celebration, and shall recommend action to me, through the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. Shit show incoming... |

Plenty of places are recognised with the more up to date naming. The UK has the "Permanent Committee on Geographical Names" as the definitive body for the way the UK govt uses these. I would hazard a guess that Google uses their database for providing names for users in the UK. (Though on that it does say that Turkey is Turkey OR Republic of Türkiye!) gov.uk |
