Here's a thing: A person isn't stupid but people are. Individually they might be thoughtful and considerate and caring, but in a crowd they'll go with the emotion and fear and rage, and I think that's exactly what Trump taps into. He tells them "Things are awful right now", which is true for a huge number of Americans, but whereas Harris has a complicated "We'll do stuff to the economy and rights and tax and fix it" message that can't be summed up in a tweet/ soundbite, Trump will shout "AND IT'S ALL THEIR FAULT! I'LL GET THEM FOR YOU!" and people who are poor and scared will buy it. He doesn't need to offer a viable solution any more than Brexit did. He just needs to say "This is bad and the people to blame are going to get a kicking if you vote for me!" It's a terrible day for the world. I don't know where this leaves any of us in terms of validity of any democratic process and it really truly scares me. |

Thank you, Nellers, for putting into words what I could not.

Voting for a fraud and liar because he makes you *feel* good is no way to select a leader. Representative democracy requires that those who actually have the time and energy to think about these things, make sure that the representatives put up for election are half-decent people rather than the worst sort of demagogues. And it requires that people think a bit about the consequences of their vote rather than voting for the guy who makes them feel good about themselves. (Johnson here was another example of the same, of course.) |

"say" That figure sounds completely absurd to me, doesn't have any plausibility that almost half the population is actually poorer than they were 4 years ago. But "feelings" of course. |

Trump/ Republican propaganda has repeated the message throughout the Biden administration that the US economy is tanking directly because of what Biden has done. I don't think the facts bear that out at all but the people who get their news from Fox will have been told repeatedly that they're worse off than ever before and they'll believe it regardless of what else is happening in their lives.

Say was deliberate by me. I have no idea whether it's true or not. The exit poll is in 10 key states so there could be some specific issues in those states.

Netanyahu has sacked his defence minister who seemed to want some compromise to get the hostages back. I expect he's pleased to see Trump back. bbc.co.uk |

Not ‘feelings’ but their lived reality based on size of take home pay and the cost of things that you spend it on. Ultimately that trumps (sorry!) any macro level statistics. |
