Don't see why Macron can't endorse the left wing/socialist/green choice Lucie Castets. I mean they (the left) practically hobbled themselves , saying IF he endorsed her they wouldn't seek any other posts. (yes it was brinksmanship, but really Macron could have called their bluff) Wasn't the previous PM but one leftish leaning anyway? Macron deserves all the crap that's coming his way). Barnier is an absolute unelected joke. A narrow majority voted for left/socialist /green alliance. But they get a right wing, moving far right to appease the Fronte Nationales, failed tosser that no-one has much love for either in France (or Britain). Democracy is currently dead in France, and Le Pen must be rubbing her hands.

30p Lee on Twitter: "We have British charities in Calais encouraging these migrants to their camps where they ... learn them to speak English."

Unfortunately he's deleted it as far as I can see.

Perhaps he should join them though.

Well if the product of a vote by the people is just Macron chooses who he wants anyway then there’s a democratic deficit and too much power concentrated in one person - le president

The fifth republic was set up by CDG though from memory just after the Algiers crisis so go figure. Then again France is still clinging to its empire even worse than this country - eg in New Caledonia - so what’s new

I think some politicians are driven by what they hate and who they blame. They are fundamentally incapable of working from a wider platform based on political philosophy, core principles and solution-based government. It's all reduced to who I hate, who you hate, who we blame and what I would do to them on your behalf. 30p is one of those.

Jenrick on sky just now. I find it hard to believe anyone wants him to lead their party, far less the country.

He's a funny old duck, but their "talent pool" is naught but a puddle now.

A puddle filled with gasping, flapping, floundering ideologues, sociopaths and halfwits.

Sad!

There’s just nothing there.

Intellectual bankruptcy was reached a while back, masked with the trappings of power and the distractions of daily events. Now laid bare.

I think it will take an exceptional leader to get them back to electability with one hand whilst luring Farage voters back with the other. Can't see it being one of the current crop. The Tories went through 3 leaders before settling on Cameron and even he didn't exactly sweep the board. It may take them a few iterations yet, assuming Labour don't balls it up completely.

That's without France still clinging on even moreso economically to its empire in Africa with drastic effects. Though that's an entire different debate.

Someone called him the British JD Vance the other day.
