Congress, senate, scotus, circuit courts, state legislatures, the US military, etc etc there's more than enough mechanisms to balance off the power of the president. I'm not saying it's infallible, and I'm not saying 'nothing to see here, move along", but I just think there is no point being drama queens about it either by over exaggerating it.

I don't think wanting a terrible choice to be mainstream in the UK is a good idea and the US is a good example of that. I'm not convinced we won't get more like Trump in the future either even if he loses.

This isn't normal. When politicians undermine institutions they are on the way to destroying them. The history books are full of instances of demagogues using institutions to gain power who then destroy the same institutions. History doesn't repeat itself, but it instructs, and intelligent people should listen to it. |

Pretty much how Hitler started out. Larkim. Sorry but I think you are being somewhat naive here. Trump put or wants to put placemen in all the institutions you named. His base is so powerful in the Republican Party that no one can say no to him. And he’s a narcissistic sociopath and liar. No need to vote cos everything is “fixed” and if you disagree then you’re going to prison cos he’s got the AG and all the judges in his pocket. And he’s got rid of all the sane people in the military and in the FBI and put his underlings in place. Think it can’t happen eh? Being “drama queens” are we? |

I'm with Larkin on this. Trump says stupid things. The concern isn't that Trump says stupid things (I'd expect that) it's that the Republican party coalesce around it. But the US machine is a lot more than Trump and I don't see the sort of things from his rhetoric coming home. I do see a direction of policy change that can cause problems for Europe - but equally for the US itself. Perhaps a good thing that could come from this is that Europe (including the UK) waking up to the fact that it needs to stand on its own two feet - and a bit closer together. |

Sane people think that he says stupid things. His supporters hang on every word. They don’t see him as an orange idiot. They think he’s their saviour. There were a lot of them wearing bandages on their ears after he got shot at. Is that being right in your head? |

No it's not. Bit it's his core, and he won't win with just his core.
