I have to wonder if Biden played a masterstroke by hanging on for long enough that Harris didn't have to face an open competition for the nomination.

Biden was not cognitively capable of ‘playing a masterstroke’ - he stubbornly clung on until the weight of evidence and pressure was irresistible. The unintended consequence of timing may be good, depending on how the campaign unfolds under Kamala.

Well she's on a surge at the moment, first poll (Ipsos) to have her ahead by 2 points. Too early I know and it's within the margin of error and likely to be noise, but there is a positivity and energy there that the Democrats have not had for months and I fully expect this to translate in the polls at some point.

A lot of Democratic voices have taken the gloves off as far as criticising Trump's cognitive state now. Hard to criticise Trump's mental state if your own guy is faltering. They are going to batter him on the age thing.

Kamala Harris' first speech was very good. Definitely more energy in the campaign right now.

How do we feel about Starmer removing whip from the 7 Labour MPs who voted for the SNP and others' amendment calling to remove the 2 child benefit cap? Draconian, or firm leadership?
Go Kamala! G

Dismayed, to be honest, Happy. Excessively authoritarian and heavy-handed, it seems to me. You can't simply withdraw the whip every time an MP disagrees with the party line.

I heard an ex Labour MP describing it as "normal". Kings Speech (so government agenda for the year), MPs know that they are supporting a party, they have to support the agenda. It wasn't a "free conscience" vote etc. I don't know what the protocols and precedents are on these things, but he made it sound like you know that if you vote against your own party, there are going to be sanctions?

There haven't been sanctions for things like this before but not exactly surprising with Starmer.
Of course if he had changed his mind and was going to get rid of the cap there wouldn't be any rebels.

I’d like to think the response to the question was planned and agreed long before the SNP raised the question, so those going against the whip were pushing the boundaries.
So I think in answer to Happy’s question it’s a bit of both - ie strong leadership but also on the heavy side
