The only argument that attempts to meaningfully separate betting from insurance is the subtle distinction that betting creates a risk where none existed, and insurance mitigates a risk that exists. In that case, “betting on yourself losing” is precisely insurance and not a bet at all, assuming that the “losing” in question has any negative consequences relative to “winning”.

Note eg that the distinction cannot be about the product alone as all sorts of financial derivatives are used entirely legitimately to hedge against risk by some traders, and to bet speculatively by others (including, maybe, those on the other side of the trade).

Fundamentally both are staking a sum on an uncertain future payoff, that’s all.

No, with insurance the aspiration is that there is no payoff. It's about protecting yourself.

To take out insurance, as a gamble is to try to make money from your policy.

Or as it's known in the industry fraud.

I thought David Tennant's choice of words were certainly clumsy, but I'm with him on the meaning. Always good to see the Equalities Minister punching down to minority groups, hopefully the Tory LGBTQ people (I still find it bizarre these exist) are taking note.

I put Badenoch in the Truss/Kwarteng pigeonhole.

“The problem with stupid people is they aren’t even smart enough to realise how stupid they are.”

I hope she gets the top job after 4th because she will be a massive train wreck. Ditto Braverman, Sméagol and Johnson - should he ever emerge from the wine cellar again.

Also, this news just in: a bottle of milk purchased from Lidl today will last longer than the Tory government. Good times.

Starmers comment on the spat is, unsurprisingly, about 100% more statesman like then Sunaks. Funny that

Latest MRP has Reform on 18 seats and yellow austerity enablers as official opposition

Starmer also won’t consider legalising any drugs, including cannabis. Seems a bit cruel as drugs may be needed to blot out a Starmer premiership

Dates of that MRP are 14-24 June so won’t fully take into account Farage’s comments.
