I suppose I could say I’m the official opposition by arguing that I’m the official opposition. It might work. |

Parties will do all sorts to create noise and interest just to get headlines. I agree, # of seats is the only arbiter. But if LDs get 20 fewer seats than Cons, but they had a higher number of votes cast for them, I'd at least be expecting they'll try to make a fuss about it. On a different note, on practically day #1 of the Blair government, Brown gave interest rate control to the BoE. It wasn't in the manifesto and no-one was expecting it. What one thing that isn't made clear in Labour's manifesto would you like to see announced? (I'm guessing the clarity of the language on Brexit in the manifesto means any volte face there will out of the question!) |

Some of it is still hypothesis but those figures above, I've annotated for percentages LD 62 (9 per cent) Conservative 29 (18 per cent) .... Reform 3 (I think it was) (also 18 per cent) Whoever gains, loses there, that just doesn't look in the slightest bit justified. Or is it? |

Not in purely numerical terms, no. Which is why PR would be a fairer system all round.

"What one thing that isn't made clear in Labour's manifesto would you like to see announced?" Lots of things, but #1 would be to commit to immediately scrapping the child benefit cap. |

Anyway, I shall wander down to the postbox shortly to send my postal ballot off.

I would say - have said in the past - that a National Reconstruction Levy Program would be a good idea - specifically as it relates to one or more of the following: NHS Social Care Education Local Govt Green Energy To be funded by big hikes or new levies in lots of places: Non-Doms Land sale windfalls Capital Gains Tax Possibly even a Social Care Levy on top of hughest income tax bands although not likely Probably other areas where the rich habitually expect to pay less tax on x than a bus driver would pay on his marginal income tax rate. All areas where the Tories would habitually defend and expand tax breaks for the rich while milking the PAYE cow for all the cheese they need. But watch this space... |

Nothing is justified by vote counts. Least of all the current 80 (minus whatever losses, I've lost count) seat majority on the basis of about 40% of the vote. But it's the system we have. I'm curious as to how many of the commentariat here voted to persist with this system when offered change in 2006?

I see we've come once again to PR. It is not going to happen any time soon. As I said before, if you want it so badly, start a campaign - but be clear about which type of PR you want. I'll vote for it. So you've got one already. Also the AV referendum was 2011. It lost by 2/3 to 1/3. I remember arguing (and voting) in favour of it, and successfully changed some minds (IIRC, including Chris!) en.wikipedia.org |

I voted in favour in 2011.
