Yep. They can't help themselves, or perhaps they can't stop themselves helping themselves. #CorruptTories

And that's the Tory mindset. It's all about being'in the club' and having position/information to make money. Nothing to do with making lives of ordinary people better, it's just opportunity to gouge the nation.

Instead, the SNP manifesto presents a programme with increased spending at its heart: an expansion of childcare provision and more “free” social services. Quite how this is to be paid for is not made clear, except that an SNP government would look to Westminster to increase its support, particularly for the health service. As the Institute for Fiscal Studies drily points out: “The list of policies included clearly has a significant net cost.” Paying for it would require tax rises or cuts in other areas of public spending. Since the SNP does not explain which route it favours, it can lay the blame elsewhere when promises are not delivered.

That reminds me.

Voters are being taken for fools on the economy

...and when there are issues caused by this Reform will be there to ride in and 'save' the day. At least that's what they'll be hoping.

Apart from Reforms policies would make things worse. They want to raise tax revenue by er cutting tax, they want business to be more productive by cutting off labour supply.

This is what happens when voters hear what they want to hear without thinking about the consequence of their vote

Agree but the point is if everyone doesn't tell the truth then voters are just choosing which lie to believe.

It's like we never learned from Brexit specifically the Brexit campaign.

Disagree Paul. The liars in the Brexit campaign won. And that's just made for more lying. It works with people who choose not to inform themselves from reputable sources.
Look at America with Trumps lies. He lies more than he tells the truth. And he's possibly going to be their next president.

Are they lies, or are they aspirations? And are the voters really ready / mature enough (in significant enough volumes) to actually digest it properly and come up with the right answers?

With enough time and consideration, I think broadly most people can be taken through the challenges of managing the public finances / spending properly, but honestly most people don't want to make the time for this, so the Parties have little choice but to manage their message through the media to garner support for the overall aspiration and approach.

That's clearly not true of everyone - those engaged on this thread probably represent a small %age of the most "interested" and informed voters. (And even then, nothing that any party can say will really shift my vote from Labour!)

Could we "regulate" elections by resourcing some independent scrutiny? Maybe, perhaps we could draft a law that required Party manifestos to be quantified / critiqued by some independent body a bit like the OBR and get that report to be the base from which campaigning happens?

So, the new person being investigated is married to the Director of Campaigning for the Tories.

Shambolic!
