Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

That's my take. More interested in his look than the damage having a fanatic in cabinet will do the country.

Sunak is just dead man walking. Think it was jda who suggested it above, but it suits nobody to be leader before a GE so until then he's leader and he'll last about 2 minutes once the 10pm opinion polls show how badly he's lost.

This is me in need of a historical lesson - but whilst with hindsight we have sight of the depravity of the Nazis, was the UK population, or indeed the "elite" in political leadership positions, motivated by suppressing the Nazi's assault on morality or was it more or less entirely territorial in terms of preventing the extension of Germany's borders?

And at what point did the understanding shift amongst the British people? Because whilst I do pay respects to those who died in the wars, I find it hard to believe that the average British soldier was doing anything other than repelling and suppressing potential invader vs fighting for moral freedoms etc.

My family has zero contact with the military and no history within it that is in family "lore" so I've got only a very remote level of personal contact with what went on during the war, which inherently has always meant Remembrance Day has had relatively little significance to me. And as I get older I understand it and respect it more, but I still struggle with some of the motives ascribed to those who fought and died on the Allied forces which feel like they are likely to over-state things and have been heavily ret-conned with our post-war understanding of Hitler's Nazi Germany.

The only reason Sunak has sacked her is because he thinks it won't go down well with the base as has been said. There's no win here for Sunak.

I don’t think the Great British Public was particularly exercised about the fate of the Jews in 1939, or other marginalised groups for that matter. Even the Kinder Transport was just…Kinder. And Turing was hounded to death years later despite his contribution.

The issue Sunak presents is that he may inflict such damage on the party that the cabal that is left post GE night will be so small and talentless that they won't be able to offer an effective opposition either.

From a pure tactical standpoint, it still yet may serve the Tories well to change a leader if they see there's a realistic prospect of limiting the losses vs what they expect of Sunak. He doesn't look like a great campaigner either. Whatever one's view of Johnson, at the very least you can say he was a successful campaigner.

I know I'm in a minority but I still find it incredulous that Johnson wasn't re-elected leader last October for that very reason.
