Listening to interview with Nick Clegg at the technology conference in Bletchly Park today, it struck me how relatively intelligent and balanced he seemed compared to some of the crazy and frankly damaged politicians we seem to have in charge at the moment. Of course, he wasn't talking about government and politics, so perhaps it's easier in "industry" and perhaps he was useless in politics, but just seemed a pretty high calibre. I think Starmer and his senior ministers in serious dispute about what they can and cannot say against the actions of the government of Israel in Gaza could cause them losses at the ballot box at the election. Possibly from both sides - those of us who think that the Labour party should be more outspoken about the atrocities being perpetrated by the forces of Israel (as well as by Hamas and other actors) as well as those that think that the Labour party are not being supportive enough of Israel. What is the legal and political status of the country of Israel? Wasn't it unilaterally declared and created through force in defiance of the 1947 UN proposed regional plan? Has it since been accepted and ratified in the various wars and peace discussions thereafter or is it still not actually an agreed territory? (I don't just mean settler occupations in the West Bank, I mean the actual border of the state of Israel that you see on a map?) |

The Express and Fail headlines trying to throw Cummings under the boss, not a mention of their beloved Johnson calling for old people to be left to die. Funny that. Also Sunak and Musk going to have a nice chat about AI. Two rich boys who came from massive privilege chatting about a technology that will affect people they have no empathy with far more than it will them. |

Yes HG is pisses me off no end to hear retired pols coming over as wise elder statespeople when they were every bit as shallow and self-interested when trying to keep their sticky fingers on the levers of power. I’m sure even Johnson will manage sensible commentary in time. |

Rish! is thickening his Silicon Valley contact book for after he gets booted. See also Clegg. Johnson and Truss are too foolish, chaotic and useless for Silicon Valley - so great picks to run a country then. |

Merry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr) I can't answer your question, but recommend The Rest is Politics podcasts on the current conflict. Rory Stewart does some really great explainers about how the current situation came to pass.

Radar is a word. But it's also an acronym and an abbreviation R.A.D.A.R. So AI if pronounced "ay-eye" can be a word, if it is considered an acronym? Sorry to be even more picky! (Not sorry!! ) Thanks Linds. I sort of know all the history from a bit of reading, and the answer to my own question is that in 1949 the UN recognised state of Israel as a country, but that 28 out of 193 members do not at this time. These are of course mostly Arab states. I suppose I'm slightly surprised that a country declares itself unilaterally to exist, and enforces that through war, and in additional complication occupies territory which is very much NOT its own, and yet that is all accepted and recognised by an international body like the UN? It's a very complicated situation, I suppose. G |

If I'm going to out-pedant myself then Ra.D.A.R. strictly speaking and I suppose AI, if it is to be a word, not an abbreviation of two words, then it should be spelled ai. Which would look *very* strange! G

Except that the creation of Israel did not happen in a vacuum either. Trying to interpret history in long term conflicts is fraught with difficulty. Nuance is often key. |
