I don't take sides. He was stupid and ill advised to reference, “from the river to the sea”, which to some is a genocidal chant when used by pro-Palestine protesters.

In his speech at a demonstration on Saturday, Mr McDonald, a former shadow minister under Jeremy Corbyn, said: "We will not rest until we have justice. Until all people, Israelis and Palestinians, between the river and the sea, can live in peaceful liberty."

As I understand it, the reason why some will find the phrase "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" offensive is that they see it as a call for a one state solution with Israel not existing. As has been said, this is contested. I can easily see how it could have started out that way but I don't know the history.

I don't see how McDonald's statement can be interpreted in that way at all though.

Wiki page on the phrase.

Agree, he's absolutely clearly not using it in a context of the genocide of Israelis. He has issued a statement tonight saying similar and that his words have been purposefully misconstrued since Saturday. I've certainly seen reporting of the words without half and the important part of his quote.

But there are equally so many layers of nuance to this debate.

And I know this is comparing apples and pears, but here's Baroness Warsi using the phrase in the Lords last week.

I ask us to follow the lead of these peacemakers. I urge noble Lords to choose peace over revenge and join me in asking His Majesty’s Government to call for an immediate ceasefire. I ask noble Lords not to follow the lead of an Israeli Prime Minister who is mired in allegations of corruption, in bed with far-right extremists, forming a Government on the basis of a coalition agreement that denies the very existence of a Palestinian state from the river to the sea, and who in 2019 said this about Hamas:

Starmer is happy to use this as an excuse to purge anyone he wants out of the Labour Party. McDonald’s wiki page says this:

September 2021, McDonald resigned as Shadow Secretary, citing lack of support from Starmer for an increase in the minimum wage to £15 per hour. He said he had been instructed by Starmer's office to argue at the Labour Party Conference "against a national minimum wage of £15 an hour and against statutory sick pay at the living wage"

Taking a pro worker position means Starmer will mark your cards.

On the other hand, Starmer and whoever is in charge of the internal workings of the party, have to be seen to be hard on absolutely any allegations of antisemitism.

Doesn't mean that I agree with this suspension, but that's the result of what's happened since 2019.

Fields knew exactly what he was voting for and don’t let anyone dare suggest otherwise.
