I had seen a report by one BBC journalist who even asked “is this what a serial killer looks like” together with blonde, blue eyed description.

Other than the fact more serial killers are male (but certainly not exclusively so) where does this identikit descriptor of a serial killer exist.

It was a pretty shoddy report, if not worse than that.

Chrisull, I'm with Happy G here. I don't assume black men are more likely to be murderers either.

It's not logical to associate moral goodness with physical appearance.

I think the trap that everyone falls into in these cases is making it all about the perpetrator. In not coming to court to be sentences this individual (and I refuse to name them explicitly) once again managed to focus all the attention on them, and once again the media and politicians lapped it up. One thing that had always upset me about people like the Moors Murderers has been that it's ALWAYS about them. If the victims are ever mentioned it's almost as if they are bit players in the perpetrators puppet show.

It's been that way for a very long time, look at the whole industry that's built up in Whitechapel around a man who eviscerated impoverished women, and how dehumanised his victims generally are.

I've a story to tell and I think it applies to all of you. I don't think there is a truly non-racist white person here. We have grown up in a system that has groomed us, whether we like it or not. The best you can do is strive to understand your biases, your background, your privilege, and account for them. Non-racism isn't a badge anyone can wear (I'm deeply suspicious of those who do) - witness the witless Jeremy Corbyn and his most faithful supporters proclaiming how it was impossible for Corby to be racist, while actually being racist. David Baddiel has just done the same over the holocaust (a man who did blackface) while attacking the Roma people and denying that the holocaust applied to them. Recognise you have blindspots because of your privilege and how your world view were inculcated. You must continually learn about your history, your views, what shaped them, and how you can seek to amend them. It is an uncomfortable pastime to unpick your own weaknesses, but it isn't your fault (not to absolve you though either) - this isn't about self-hate, but it is something you can address.

I was mugged in my student years. The colour of the mugger was irrelevant, except after the mugging I felt a physical, visceral, instinctive fear/aversion to people of the same colour to the person who had mugged me. It wasn't logical, it was physical, it was deeply shocking and I hated it, it upset me and I didn't understand it. It went after a couple of days. But it taught me, I wasn't the holier than thou left winger in my teens I thought I was. It spoke to me that there was an unconscious racial bias I still held, despite talking the talk. The lesson was you could always do better. I find it easier to accept that Harold Shipman was a serial killer than Lucy Letby. And judging by the views expressed to do plenty of others as well.

I think that for most people (me included) there are unconscious biases which will affect how you judge people. There is so much conditioning about pretty=good and ugly=wicked that we probably do struggle to see a nice young female nurse as a killer. We expect these evil people to look more sinister.

Ooh, that's a good one. IT worker who previously said he didn't recall any attempt to delete security videos (Florida house, covering up the confidential files storage charge) changes his testimony. Why, cos now he's has a public defender lawyer, not Trump's own lawyer.

Gosh this stinks. Coercion by lawyers. Is USA a democracy run by the rule of law? Or a failed state where your lawyer can be bought? :-) G
