SNP + Green is the most socialist vote you can have in Scotland at the moment (apart from Scottish Socialist Party, which is led by an unsavoury character!) But come independence, we would have a better choice. Except, Fields, did you say the EU has banned all socialism now? Sorry, I must have missed that European Court judgement. Can you post a link to it please? G

Thomas I think the EU is a neoliberal club. It’s pro austerity, anti trade union, undemocratic and against public ownership of companies. Being part of the EU is incompatible with a socialist agenda.

Sorry. That didn't format so well. That's a quote from Fields' link to the Guardian dinner date.

It's just complete bollocks though. A total fantasy.

Bazoaxe - I think that criticism is valid. What Shanks has done is highlighted just how out of touch Labour are on child poverty an area that matters to the Scottish electorate. It must have come up in polling or why would he deviate from Labour policy?

How can you have candidates whose approach to their party's policies is to pick and mix?

This is an own goal.

How can a UK party have different policies for a Westminster election in different parts of the UK? How can Labour square the circle of appealing to Scottish and English voters with different priorities? Do we see Scottish Labour MPs not taking the Labour whip or voting against their government in Westminster?

Would candidates in England remain on the candidates' list if they came out against Labour policy like this?

I think anyone wanting a socialist Brexit would have got a better outcome if they’d taken the trouble to elect a socialist government first, and furthermore a socialist government which had a socialist Brexit in its manifesto. Plus, convincing the country to vote for a socialist Brexit in any referendum which may have been held. Just those three small things and voila! ex-EU Socialism a go go.

As it is, socialist Brexiteers were “useful idiots” (to coin a Leninist phrase) for the likes of Farage, Mogg and Spoony McBeermat who, I think I’m right in saying, weren’t touting Brexit so they could deliver a socialist utopia. Quite the reverse in fact.

Put a whole row of carts before the horse, so they did.

I would have to re-examine my thought process on an issue if I realised that my bedfellows consisted of Rees-Mogg, Farage, Johnson and the rest of that ghastly cast of goons.

I'd maybe have thought that perhaps what I'm looking to achieve by doing this will actually deliver a worse outcome and the people and institutions I think are to blame for destroying society will be further enabled and emboldened to do their worst.

Maybe.

I agree with much of that Surelynot

It does though illustrate the conflicting snp view which demands this difference then calls out the flaws when it is in Evidence.

I reckon the Sanchez government in Spain has done pretty well with a left agenda and coalition. They've capped energy prices and taxed excessive profits, with inflation now at around 2%.

Spain is, of course, a member of the EU. Formerly fascist, isolated, economic basket case, Spain.
