Being absent whike the shit hits the fan can be a good thing. I seem to recall Major was having tooth surgery when Thatch was being knifed.

In contrast I like this comment in the guardian re Nadhim Zahawi sticking the knife in.

“ Nadhim Zahawi had been seen as a strong contender before taking the job of chancellor on Tuesday, drawing up plans for a major economic speech next week, then publishing a letter less than 48 hours later urging Johnson to resign. As one senior backbencher put it: “He’s made himself look like a knob.””

When you watch good political dramas the key players are subtle, knowing, crafty, coniving. The whole of the current Tory ministerial payroll look like complete novices, with the exception maybe of Javid and Sunak (and Truss, if her choice to be away was anything other than just lucky timing).

Once the Sunak and Javid resignations had happened, anyone that sat alongside Johnson at PMQs on Wednesday looks like an absolute novice.

Javid definitely looked like he had a well designed game plan.

I'm still pondering Sunak. He deliberately didn't go for a Commons resignation statement the next day which would have been a good time to make capital, but equally he'd have had to share the stage with Javid. But he also made quite a point of noting that would be his final ministerial appointment; doesn't quite rule out PM ambitions, but felt more like he'd had enough of politics and expected to leave the HoC next time around.

Sky has this on the current contenders. Good to see Baker doing better than Gove - you know, the Gove who says he is not running :)

These are the latest odds for the next Tory leader:

Ben Wallace - 5/2

Rishi Sunak - 4/1

Tom Tugendhat - 6/1

Penny Mordaunt - 13/2

Liz Truss - 10/1

Sajid Javid - 11/1

Jeremy Hunt - 14/1

Nadhim Zahawi - 14/1

Steve Baker - 18/1

Michael Gove - 25/1

Tom Tugendhat would be nicknamed tugemoff surely

Yes. Michael Gove is a big 3 figure price on Betfair from 42 on Wednesday. Raab who I also believe has said he’s not standing a much shorter 3 figure price.

Tory MPs are the most venal, self-serving electorate on the planet, and the winner could easily be the contender who is most successful at manipulating them.
