It's a conundrum. Part of me acknowledges that that could happen, but I feel that it is only a possibility given their last 12 years of abject failure and chaos will still count against them next time. But the two big counters for me are that firstly he needs to face a reckoning for the damage he has inflicted on the country. Kicking him out will be merely the start of the reckoning he will face. Secondly, he damages the country, the economy, the public purse, our institutions and our democracy on a daily basis, and we need to get shut of him. If that means we get a half-competent Tory in his place, so be it. |

yes I thought 3 years ago that Labour would have a decent chance at the next election, and I think now that the Tories still do too. A year is a very long time indeed in politics, any number of things could happen, including changes of leadership and direction for both parties.

It's all to play for, but I think any idea that Johnson himself will change his spots is way off the mark. He is what he is. His latest death-defying "escape", the arslikhan of his supine cabinet, and the support of his chums in the press will only embolden him.

He is likely to be replaced by someone just as vile, useless and dishonest. But that person is unlikely to have the same TV celeb qualities which have served him so well, and the client press won't be able to build them up nearly as successfully.

I don't think that they are all as vile, useless and dishonest as he is. Admittedly he did purge the best of the MPs.

Nothing “left leaning” about this lot - and anybody asking for Elon Musk to support them financially must be a little bit mad! Include me out… politico.eu |

No, jda, I don't think they are all as vile, useless and dishonest as he is, just the ones likely to make the shortlist. The people he has promoted to high position are in effect like lesser versions of him, with the same faults. He has weeded out (or caused to resign) all the capable and honest ones.

I remember when various people here rubbished the idea that Brexit was going to cause substantial harm to UK science. theguardian.com |

"Boris Johnson is planning to announce that imperial measurements will be revived to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The Prime Minister is expected to say that British shops will be allowed to sell products in pounds and ounces. Government insiders told the Mirror that ministers are making an announcement on 'imperial measures' this Friday to coincide with celebrations for the monarch's 70 years on the throne. Downing Street will hope it shores up support among key Brexiteer voters in battleground seats which Tories are currently in danger of losing. The PM is under growing pressure in the wake of the Partygate scandal with a steady trickle of Tory MPs handing in letters to try to trigger a confidence vote. But while the move represents a victory for 'metric martyrs' it is a largely symbolic one to address gripes about EU interference in traditional English life. Since 2000 when the EU weights and measures directive came into force traders have been legally required to use metric units for the sale by weight or measure of fresh produce." Let's use a method of measurement used by nobody else in the world as a sop to racist OAPs who still think half the global map "should" be pink and we need more Norman Wisdom films on the telly. |
