Cheg may be correct - all former presidents are invited, but I think they can decline to attend (for example I would presume Jimmy Carter would be too old/frail to attend in Jan, particularly during the CV-19 pandemic). Apparently 5 outgoing presidents have not attended the swearing in ceremony and 3 refused to even accompany the pres-elect full stop (the outgoing pres is supposed to escort the incoming pres to the ceremony) - John Adams, John Q Adams and Andrew Johnson. Wilson (rode to capitol, but presumably too ill to attend the ceremony) and Nixon (due to watergate/resignation) were the other two not to attend the ceremonies. |

It would be important for Trump to show the peaceful transfer of power but Trump has been given a demi-God status amongst his fan base. Think Trump really does believe he is "the chosen one" delivered by God to America. If Trump does not transfer power peacefully it is possible for his tea party fan base to take action for him. Good on the SS for protecting him now. |

I would love Trump to attend Biden's inauguration, because it would be the most miserable experience of his life. Absolutely not the centre of attention, a cast-off failure, forced to watch an inauguration crowd much bigger than his own.

J2R, that couldn't happen because, and I'm sure I'm remembering this correctly, the entire world showed up for Trump's Inauguration. I'm sure he said it was the biggest crowd ever and they had to build a bigger city to fit them all in or something.

The secret service would have already been protecting Biden - the major candidates can request official secret service protection as soon as they are officially nominated I think. The no-fly zone thing I think is the step-up since he's likely to be president-elect, because as soon as that's official, there's an increase in security. They may have moved ahead of the official announcement due (a) Trump and (b) the fact that it's obvious. |

It blows my mind that individuals (of any political persuasion) can just walk down the street carrying semi-automatic weapons. Bonkers.

There won't be a big crowd due to covid restrictions unfortunately.
