SFL - For once I agree! TMW - I don't necessarily agree on foodbanks, BUT a basic income would be one way of "sorting" that. I don't like a judgemental benefit system that ultimately pits worker against non-worker for an illusory moral high ground("I work hard for my money" vs "I can't work") , when the real big time criminals go free (nice to see Iceland jailing their bankers thinkprogress.org ) If you give everyone enough to get by on food and rent, then if they're "spunking it up the wall", well it becomes easier to point the finger... although I'd also say what about those people incapable of making good decisions due to low IQ, various addictions etc, how do you treat them? We expect everybody to make an equal contribution to society, but some people can't and never will through no fault of their own (mental illness for starters?) I believe the true mark of civilization is how we treat those who can't help themselves. One side says let them rot. I've never subscribed to that point of view. |

Too Much Water
The point remains I don't want to subsidise those who make a conscious choice not to pay their own way

There is a undoubtedly a problem with who is going to foodbanks, you can solve this, benefits are not given as money but as vouchers for food/power etc..... I also happen to think the daily mail type "scroungers" nonsense is sticking, the vast majority of people wrk and the majority of people who are not want to. |

In the name of equality we should force the most intelligent people to breed with those with the lowest IQ. The next generation should then be of fairly equal (albeit average) intelligence.

Spleen
They have food vouchers in the US and while I'm not well informed about them, I know they're far from a panacea. The obvious problem is that a waster will just exchange their food stamps for cash on the black market and then buy booze with it. Do you then let them starve? That's not a rhetorical question. If food stamps are the supposed to obviate the problem of food banks then the question is what happens when someone is starving, has no food stamps and there are no food banks because food stamps were supposed to solve that problem.

Find myself agreeing with Spleen now too. Totally valid question. What should you do to help those who won't or can't help themselves? I don't think in a modern society "nothing" is an acceptable answer.

What do you mean by "the problem" of food banks? I see food banks as evidence that free people can and will feed the poor when needed. It it worse that someone hungry can relies on the voluntary donation of food rather than a government hand out that has involved forced taxation? |

I think we need to stop painting those who can't help themselves as victims. It's never their own fault, poor them.
