Fair points re VAT Spleen, and I'm familiar with the examples of iniquity you provided. A flat rate for everything would be much simpler. However, in the system I think it's bizarre that sanitary products are not zero rated. Not every woman has children, but nearly all of them menstruate for a large part of their lives. |

I was a bit surprised in Croatia to find that everything, including food, seemed to have 25% VAT on it

So SFL in other words you are supporting a) Gordon Brown's bailout of the banks and b) by saying "Comparing the UK financial sector with Greece is as fundamentally flawed as believing that a German rent control system could be applied in the UK." that you admit that in the 2010 election the Tories platform of saying "we will end up like Greece" was a completely fallacious assumption to make, because our economy is so different to Greece's as to negate comparisons - which is pretty much what the left's position has been throughout. And while you say rent controls can't be applied to the UK system you fail totally to say how then we might address the problem of the social cleansing of London such that nurses, teachers, firemen in the public sector and private sector cleaners, shop assistants. call centre workers and other low paid/non skilled jobs can afford to live in the places where they work? You also fail to address the fact that without rent controls profiteering by landlords, who do nothing for their wealth other than sit on property, continues rife, and helps add fuel to our ridiculous runaway house prices, especially in London, which will lead later to another boom and bust. SO if you don't think rent controls will work (and I suspect Binks will partially side with you on this) what do you think are the answers to the above two problems? |

Totally off topic, but here are three of today's Guardian opinion columns: Should gentlemen make love on their elbows? Why Britain needs to know Our philosophical attitude towards poo needs to change The name's Bond, Jane Bond: what would lesbian 007 look like? And from yesterday's: Give Ai Weiwei your Lego bricks so he can show what corporate politics looks like This seems to confirm my theory that the Guardian is turning into http://commentisweird.tumblr.com/. (In case you're wondering, I read it for the football.) |
