I think we need to stop painting those who can't help themselves as victims. It's never their own fault, poor them.

"They have food vouchers in the US and while I'm not well informed about them, I know they're far from a panacea. The obvious problem is that a waster will just exchange their food stamps for cash on the black market and then buy booze with it."

This just sounds like a poorly administered system. A simple solution would be to use a payment card (rather than physical vouchers) with the person's photo on the card. It would also be far less expensive to for the government to electronically top up the card rather then having to distribute vouchers across the country each week.

So why have so many Con MPs voted against removing VAT from sanitary products. I don't believe it's misogyny, there's a political motive. Maybe Dave can get the EU to scrap it closer to the referendum date, and look a hero?

A card might be better, SFL, but that puts the onus on shop staff to enforce the system, and it's open to corruption.

That's true - but it would be better than the current system.
The worse case scenario would be that some people (a small minority) would find a way round the system and find a way to get an equal amount of cash to the amount of 'credit' on their card, but at the moment we give everyone the cash directly anyway. So there's no real 'downside'.

So ok - rather than continuing to fight the corner of the hardest to defend, the bone idle, how about here, what about those steelworkers who were recently lost their jobs???

Italy and Germany have recently used EU fund to safeguard their steel industries. Why aren't we doing the same in this country, yet we've spent billions bailing out the totally inept bankers? Even diehard Thatcherite Peter Oborne has admitted the arguments made in this article are hard to refute:

Sure - if we can dip into a pot of EU money to prop up the steel industry then we should.

I think the main difference between the 2 sectors is that we have a huge and sustainable competitive advantage in Banking and Finance so bailing it out makes sense in the long run. Steel on the other hand is a commodity.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

It was wrong to bail out the banks.

Why was it wrong? Financial Services are over 25% of our economy and generate £65 Billion per year in tax.

I realise it wasn't popular, but it was the right thing to do.

Nope - totally wrong, the problems in Greece directly stem from the decisions the EU made to bail out Greece. Irresponsible banks should be left to fail.
