So, simple question...Are the British fundamentally right wing in inclination? Obviously not everyone, but a majority? And if so, why?
I ask because when you look at the governments we've had in the last 50 years, it's pretty well a sea of Conservative with a brief interlude under Blair/Brown which in the context seems anomalous, and which was only achieved by Labour moving rightwards. (This is not knocking the Blair government, which I think actually did more to improve the lives of people in this country than any other government in decades).
Other countries in Western Europe seem to alternate between moderate right and moderate left. But not us.

I would say yes, with the caveat being you need to look at our electoral system. The I had a article today that showed what parliament would look like if we had PR, way, way short of a majority, (I know an old chestnut), but if we had it, I am pretty sure we would get different governments, and people may well vote differently.

Oddly enough I recently heard Farage banging on about how he wants PR.

So he should, they'd win seats. As would the Greens and LDs would have a meaningful presence.

WS not only would people vote differently more people would vote.
There are loads of seats where only one person will win, except in exceptional circumstances.

In contrast only 4 out 59 seats in Scotland were considered sure things prior to last Thursday.

I think there's a very strong small c conservative bent to the British psyche - we like our traditions and think they've served (the straight, white, majority of) us well enough in the past so aren't overly keen on changing things.
It's not *always* a bad thing, but some change is desperately needed.

OTOH a large majority of people are fairly disengaged and/or don't think or care very much. It's not like turnout is massively higher in marginal seats etc.

The English seem to be a bit more look after them and theirs compared to continental folk in my limited experience. That leads to a slightly more right wing outlook. And so we will socially and culturally tend to align more with the USA than our neighbours. Could be talking bollocks of course.

Lots of folk like to harp back to our perceived glorious history, like genocide in Tasmania, introducing concentration camps in South Africa, exporting food from Ireland while millions died & the slave trade.
Won two World Wars don’t ya know.
