If there is a delay, it will be a year or at least 6 months. This is because I don't believe Johnson will ask for a delay, therefore it will be the demand of unity government (or the law courts, I think there is a clause in their that means this can happen), and they will not want to run out of time in 3 months. It's that or no deal.

Chris, this is what I would like to see. But how do we then deal with the inevitable ramping up of the whole 'Remoaner Establishment thwarting the will of the people' narrative?

I'm going to go with fingers in ears and going 'lalalala I can't hear you', but if really pushed 'WWYLGOI' and calling then treacherous enemies of the people.

I don’t think they are floating ideas - this was leaked by Ireland wasn’t it?
I’ve seen commentary that says a leak is usually laying the groundwork for rejection, if it is seriously considered it moves along further before entering the public domain.
If that’s the case, expect Bojo to start ramping up the blame game.

I've just come back from a place which for years had a no-mans-land border.

There's a reason they don't have it any more. But it was certainly useful to curtail freedom of movement, and frictionless trade, at least in one direction.

Maybe that should be the plan.

Also worth remembering that "out of date" is Bonson-speak for "essentially unchanged but we corrected some typos and change the font since then".

Raymond: My sister is a barrister and was similarly gobsmacked by the ruling. In her words "Where's the "But"?"

The Tories are using the threat of civil unrest as a sort of reverse "Project fear". There's no one for a popular uprising to coalesce around. People like Farage aren't going to ruin their political ambitions, which they most certainly will as the security services simply won't let it get that far.

People will riot if there's no food or if little Johnny can't get his medicine.

Hong Kong this isn't...

They won't FR. There have been food banks for several years now following Tory austerity.

And people won't riot if there is a significant economic downturn and unemployment rises and benefits are cut. They won't.

Riots are more single issue - miners' strike, poll tax, race, religion, police brutality.

They won't riot over "life got hard". It's not France.

JSR - throw a dead cat on the table (metaphorically speaking). Get people talking about something else controversial. First a long delay of a year means it's hard to ramp up pressure continually, attention wanders over 12 months. Second Brexit and the EU wasn't a big issue before 2016, other things do take over (wars, disease, disaster), so assume that sooner or later, something else is gonna take precedent.

Name-calling will be called out, and Ad hominem will be frowned upon. :-) And whatabout-ery sits somewhere above responding to tone and below contradiction.
