Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

All that has happened recently is that a couple of people on the EU side have reiterated that they are (still) open to ideas and proposals. This has been wildly spun as meaning we are close to a deal.

Honestly, I find it difficult to have a positive impression of anyone that get's excited by being in the middle ground on the big issues. So in my eyes she is tainted by that brush quite badly, as is any LibDem leader past or future.

However, she is at least clear on Brexit.

David Henig (as ever) explains why talk of a "deal being close" is rubbish: twitter.com

Basically BJ et al have proposed a version of the WA with the backstop removed (but apparently *some* alignment on SPS - but not enough - and this only covers 30% of cross-border traffic anyway) and removal of the level-playing field agreements (the EU will *never* agree to this).

The EU have basically just reiterated their position - they are open to concrete suggestions.

Laura K et al are basically just the No10 spin machine.

Listen to what the Brussels-based journalists and the experts (yes, I know) are saying: Katya Adler, Peter Foster etc... all saying pretty much the same thing and it's very different to what the Tory PR chief Kussenburg is saying.

She did some (nothing to do with politics) consulting work for us after she lost her seat and wasn't sure about going back to parliament. (We didn't know it was her who was actually going to turn up and do the work until she arrived.) She impressed me greatly. I absolutely cannot imagine Johnson or Corbyn doing a useful day's work in a business environment.

So, at the very least, smart, competent, likeable, not weird. FWIW, I'd say the same about Heidi Allen & Matt Hancock too - whatever opinions one might hold about their actual politics.

Any politicians I've met or engaged with, whether I liked their policies or not, have always greatly impressed me - both their 'leadership' style and their abilty to pick out key points quickly & decisively.
(even if they appear absolute d**kheads on TV and in the media, the real person has always been very different - plausible, genuine & capable)

I've met a few in person who certainly haven't impressed, um.

rf_fozzy do you really believe that "Tory PR chief LK" stuff? Whenever I read stuff like that it makes me think the contributor is some sort of conspiracy theory nut job (due respect, etc!!) As a card carrying Labour supporter, I've never once heard anything from her which gives me any impression of bias, she's always felt to me equally critical of all sides. But maybe I'm missing something.

They have to be quite charismatic in person to get to where they are. Unfortunately that's the only skill required and not infrequently the only skill possessed. Though some are clearly more than that.

I don't much like Swinson's aggression (opponents are no better of course) but it's pretty much par for the course. I do like that they LDs have taken a clear stance on brexit, much more honest than the labour fudge and it's worth bearing in mind that more than twice as many signed the revoke petition as voted for LD and Green combined in the last general election so it can hardly be considered an extreme minority position.
