Legally Unions need 40% of the total membership to vote in favour to call industrial action - not democratic otherwise.

Don't dare suggest the 38% vote in favour of brexit is anything other than the purest and holiest expression of democracy ever.

Think the idea is more a national protest on an individual basis rather then a union driven workplace dispute.

Sounds like opposition plans will kick off next week but chances of success aren’t great with the Lords being the weakest link where the clock could be run down to block new legislation.

Two things 1. Stander's copy of a joke picture was just that. A joke. I agree with him. Smile, for goodness sake. 2 Stevewjj SECOND POST OF ALL TIME (having been a Fetchie for over 12 years). Wow - I'm on about 30,000 posts and I've only been a Fetchie for 11 years! ;-)

Seriously, I still can't see what the opposition are doing to stop this PM running roughshod over democracy. I think there is a HUGE shake up required in UK constitution, if we survive this next 60 days, to modernise what is a hugely archaic system.

At the moment, BoJo holds all the card and has shown he is prepared to play EVERY one. A vote of no confidence doesn't force him to resign or to close gov't. He can resist and may well do. He can delay things until after 31 Oct and we crash out.

We should be taking action - Legal, Parliamentary, Public Direct, whatever is necessary to stop this idiot from massively hurting the country, which will do most harm to the most vulnerable, and only give benefits and gains to the privileged few. Madness.

When is the public demo and march on parliament. I have NEVER marched. I (am paid by the day, so it costs me to take time off!) but I would LOSE a couple days pay to try and do something, anything to protest. Grrr.

Nice post Happy, but why should we be taking action to stop a government from carrying out what the referendum asked it to do?

It is precisely because certain elements have tried to use any and every backdoor trick, ploy and ruse to stop Brexit, that has led Boris to go down this road.

Can we assume that by 'certain elements' you mean the ERG? Rees-Mogg was on Today this morning making the same complaint, but neglected to mention that he himself had voted against leaving when given the opportunity to do so.

The referendum result did not say when or how we should leave the EU so there is no mandate to bypass the elected body whose job it is to answer those points and execute a plan that reflects the interests of the whole country.

No Dochart, I mean the Remainers who have tried to stop Brexit completely. Deal, or no deal.

And May's deal wasn't Brexit. Not with the backstop in it.

"It is precisely because certain elements have tried to use any and every backdoor trick, ploy and ruse to stop Brexit..."

Er, no. In over 2 years, the Government has been unable to negotiate a deal to make a graceful Brexit possible. Checks and balances have prevented an unfavourable or no-deal Brexit taking place. The latest turn of events is a cynical tactic employed to sidestep democratic process.

A comparison: A government may be elected on manifesto promises, but they cannot put these promises into effect without the appropriate legislation being passed after amendments and debates in the house.
