Hello
So I have been to a lunchtime class a couple of times, as I have had back issues for 6 months and thought it might help.
I just found it all quite easy and like it wasn't doing anything
Could it be doing anything beneficial even if I feel like it's doing nothing? Do I need to find a harder/better class? Or should I just stop wasting time and go and sit in Costa with a book instead?

Hello to you too!
I mean, I can touch my toes and put my hands on the floor and all that jazz, so it's not like there's no flexibility in my back, it just felt like a far too easy 45 mins of nothing!

So why is your back bad then?
This should help strengthen the whole of your core, not just improve flexibility.

I dunno- it gets tight and stiff on the bike.
In about May there was a period where I had ages off cycling as I couldn't walk never mind ride a bike I was in agony. It's much better now but it's not totally fixed

Class is far too easy for my abs- I do some other core stuff on my own ow. Maybe it's just that the class isn't hard enough. Or maybe I'm just not cut out for Pilates I just find it so boring

I do it every week and it's great for overall core strength as well as flexibility. It should be about using your core muscles and pulling everything in as you do the exercises. Not so it hurts but just to make you feel stronger, like when doing a plank.
If you aren't getting much from it, maybe ask the teacher if you're doing it right / where you should feel the exercise working? If they are good they should be able to help you / show you. Our class has different levels of each exercise so if you are stronger / been doing it a while, you can do it to a harder level than the beginners and build things up. Maybe it is too basic?
You are much more flexible than me by the sounds of things though - I can't touch my toes with my legs straight!! But I don't think it's primarily about that - yes it helps but I'd say yoga is more about flexibility and Pilates about core strength.

Well try an advanced class then and see how you go.
I used to love the relaxed approach, with focus on some really specific areas.
maybe the teacher is rubbish...

Pilates can be very tough! It really depends on the instructor - and you have to be doing the exercises right. For many of them, if you don't engage your core while doing the exercises they will feel easy, but they also won't be doing anything for you. I remember finishing Pilates classes sweating buckets!

I know where they should work as I did a 2 day teaching course once when I worked in a gym.... There aren't any advanced classes at my gym, she does suggest the harder versions but they still don't do much. Maybe it's just this class
