I think they had their license extended to 400 subsequently, however they would exceed that on NYD for example so had to actively discourage people from attending to safeguard the other 51 parkruns.

Larkim, if you'd got as far as the second sentence of my post you'd have seen the argument I presented about the likelihood of large numbers of non-registered runners attending. You could have argued against if you wanted. They've had a year to work on a registration system. It's hardly rocket science and every other race I've ever taken part in manages this. No reg no result would sort it very quickly for the large majority. But parkrun is special, of course. |

That's the one. I wonder if this is/will cause an issue for some permissions. The Roadmap limits outdoor events to 50% capacity, & that could continue after 21st June (it says 'subject to review' on the Roadmap) If parkrun was previously given permission as an 'event' & not 'organised outdoor sport', then that could be what landowners/LAs are treating it as. |

I did read that jda, but in the current climate I'd still reckon that there'd be plenty of "bandits" attending, or people not engaged with parkrun's social media etc and attending without even thinking about any requirement to register; that's why I think it's a red herring. If it was "no reg, no result" there'd still be nothing to stop me attending, running through the finish line and presenting a barcode to be scanned without the volunteer knowing whether I "should" have run or not. For most races a bib number is that identification, and in any event the usual concern is that no bib = not paid so there's a different perspective on registration there (and yes, I know that this doesn't apply to all races / events, but it's a pretty good generalisation). I know you believe that parkrun are trying to maintain an unreasonable operating model with the "just turn up" approach (and despite what it might seem like, I do agree that that should be something that parkrun have considered and be willing to implement at some point if required), but given how robust they have been about that since summer last year I can't see them changing their tack AND I think given where we are in the pandemic / unlocking it is unnecessary. I also suspect that even if they did go for pre-registration, the landowners which are being reticent would have the same concerns. e.g. Forestry England is being pretty robust that there will be no events (even their own) on their land until September (if I understand correctly). No registration system would change that. |

@jda You've been mentioning the idea of pre-registration for getting on for a year now. But you've yet to explain how that would work with the concept of parkrun being open to all and not turning anyone away. Other than prison parkruns where you need permission from the governer to participate, either as a resident or visitor, the idea of having some kind of pre-registration just doesn't fit in any way shape or form with what parkrun is. It would completely break the point of it and make it inaccessible to those who it can benefit the most. |

Spiedog, Parkrun may need to compromise on that concept to protect their future - even if only for a short period of time It really would be sad if parkrun didnt survive and I really dont think that would happen. They do though need to be open to some compromise. they are not the only business who has had to adapt and compromise in the last 15 months |

But if they compromise on that then it ceases to be parkrun. They can make some changes, but absolutely not the free bit or the open to all bit. It is set out in their aims with the Charity Commission, and has been behind the concept since day one. Restricting access cannot happen or it would disappear. |

That’s their choice though. They absolutely could make short term compromises for their long term future.

The cannot change the free or open to all bits. It would go against their articles with the Charity Commission, although they might turn a blind eye I'm sure someone helpful would report them. If people start getting turned away or results deleted you then break the concept of parkrun and people no longer go. It really is fundamental to the point of parkrun the free an open to all bits. |
