Ignoring the potential of multiple John Smiths etc, 285 of the 644 at Nostell appear to have run at Ponte too.

Actually, make that 257 if I exclude people called “unknown”

We had 360 something at our first, 470 something at second, and 230 odd did the double

As an experienced RD, the thought of managing one half of the double fills me with fear.
Too much pressure

OK so my hypothesis is clearly wrong, at least in some areas. Very high proportion of doubles. Easily stopped by timing if organisers want to.

In the same way that Christmas and New Year are exceptions, in the non parkrun sense, so are the parkrun events. And I like that. People need their exceptions, their celebrations. So some people drive a bit more? (I did, and quite enjoyed the drive. And just getting away, and being elsewhere.) Well, should we apply that same logic to people driving longer distances to see friends and family? Or going on holiday.
I can see the problems of events becoming victims of their own success. Maybe, to manage numbers, holding a NYD parkrun should be made compulsory for events

Driving, it depends if you think driving too and from events is against the ethos of a local event. I tend to think it is. Given the stuff recently about the dire consequences for the planet as regards environmental damage, I reckon you can argue that, yes. But as with all things, I think people pay lip service to environmental damage they cause, but actually do very little to remedy it. Plastic possibly being a notable exception lately (milk bottles aside strangely)
Not controversial, just wrong, you can't force a volunteer to do anything.

(not really a serious suggestion above)
Is a local event one you can reach without personal local transport? In which case, parkrun would be over for me. If I spent two hours on foot, I could get to one I don't really like. But I'm not that up to eleven miles at the moment. Solve commuting for work*, then I'll worry properly about the impact of driving to parkruns.
* Which I don't do currently, or for a while, and when I did it was nearly all quite short distances at usually off peak times.
