In this pic the flag is between the funnel and the path. I usually try and put it on the other side of the funnel to make it a bit more obvious where the entrance to the funnel is.

It looks pretty straightforward. And you have cones marking the run in? Must be your runners that are weird then
Some further questions. Is the flag at the finish point? Do you have a sign with "FINISH" on it? Why is your funnel curved? Why is Tokens standing in the middle of the funnel?

We do have cones marking the run in, the flag is at the finish (we move it from the start to the finish whilst runners are running), we did have a finish sign but recently we have just been using chalk on the path, the funnel is curved because we had some runners that ran straight through the funnel and then turned right onto the path into the way of some runners that weren't yet finished so we added the curve to nudge them to the left to avoid a repeat. I can't help with why the tokens volunteer was did in the middle of the funnel. That was just where they happened to be standing when the photo was taken.

I've only done Tokens once, but was instructed by the core team to stand in the funnel so that anyone progressing along it had no choice but to come past me and either take or decline a token (in which case, pocketed by me). We're lucky in that it is fence on one side and tape on the other, so only the chance to duck out on one side.

Thank you for your replies A funnel manager I think could well help you in ensuring correct finisher = correct token and none other. Also, whilst I wouldn't suggest that funnels mangers actually strongarm anyone* they can be a gently assertive presence, should it be needed.
My last couple of volunteerings were as funnel manager and tokens. At Falkirk for around 250 runners there are two managers and a tokens assistant. No number checker, but RD did a little ad hoc number checking. Manager duty was largely moving along the pukers and gaspers, especially when a bunch came in; and reeling in the odd over-runner (those who keep running to the end of the funnel!) And cheering, of course, that seems to be the main duty
*except for at Edinburgh

We have a weekly problem with token giver outers moving closer to the finish line when runners start coming through in greater numbers - rather than moving back, to allow the line to clear. I say they same every week `it is up to them to get the token from you, not up to you to chase them', so we typically end up with people half way up the funnel

Isn't that interesting? (Well it is to me anyway) We've never, to my knowledge had token givers move *down* the funnel, but we have had to get them to move back when the funnel gets so full there's a danger of queuing across the line. Some regulars are on the ball and do it without having to be told, others seem oblivious. Every parkrun community seems to have its own little quirks

Our funnel was so long last week that the front runners were commenting how good it was that they could ge their breath as they walked along it. The problem came about half way when the queue for scanning was backing into the funnel, we had to nobble someone to get them moving across. It was because the scanners were in the stadium due to wet so only a single line went up the stairs instead of choosing one of 3 scanning queues as normal.
