Mike - Bear in mind that there are many events that might not be able to access the parkrun system at the location or time that they decide to cancel and they would either have to return home or go to the nearest wi-fi hotspot ( which could mean leaving the event location ). Getting a signal at Lullingstone is a bit hit and miss even with a self built tower contraption to hold a mobile in the right place to create a hotspot with enough juice to open the portal. Core teams do their best ( as always ) to broadcast news of any cancellations and update across all social media and official pages.

I sympathise hugely with parkruns and cancellations. Not everyone checks their social media or emails before they head out of the door on a Saturday morning in any event, and the text messaging only works if you've signed up to it - which I know first hand a fair few haven't. It's especially difficult if the weather doesn't look like it should be cancellation friendly.
This weekend, anyone who turns up at parkrun without checking something out first would be mad in most locations - it might not just be the course, it could be the car parks, roads nearby etc etc causing issues. But quite a few of the weekends where we've seen cancellations, I would have never have thought there would be issues as I presume people are sensible enough to not sprint around a frosty corner etc. Though clearly I am not underwriting the insurance policy for parkrun, so I can be a bit "freer" with my risk assessments!

we had an instance a couple of weeks ago.
Lovely cold brisk sunny morning, but we still had residual sheet ice from a week previous. Just areas of the course that get no footfall thru the week, not much sun and melted a little/froze/melted a little /froze every day making it just more treacherous.
The other parkrun in town was on, (by the sea), but we had to cancel and everyone thought we were making it up. as it was a lovely day

There's not really any grounds to be annoyed if you get there and it's been cancelled - either at late notice or on a media stream you weren't following.
After all no-one is stopping you just going for a run, a jog, a walk, or even a coffee and a cake (whatever it is you go to parkrun for..) of your own volition.
And there will be another parkrun next week!
The people getting annoyed are likely those who have driven a ridiculous distance to 'tick off a letter' or some other such frivolity - and they wouldn't be my priority demographic.

Also it's free so it's not like a race where there was an entry fee involved...I'm sure these decisions are not take lightly.

Fair points. At the end of the day these things happen.. I just wondered about a simple improvement. Its life sometimes and nothing should be perfect otherwise perfection will be demanded ongoing. I will be relaxed about it...

I think you're right to ask whether the system is good enough, but I'm just not convinced there is a perfect answer!

larkim - spot on. Lullingstone is highly unlikely to cancel due to conditions on the course itself ( it is off road, falls happen - especially if you forget trail shoes and resort to your driving shoes ) but the core team and park staff might not be able to get there due to the road conditions.
