In my family we used to have a ‘put-you-on’, ie. Something that would see you through (put you on) to the next mealtime.

I ran past earlier in the week. I’d have given her a knock if I’d known before

We had shivery bites after swimming. It was the bit of swimming I liked best, to be honest.

Velociraptor
Sue Lawrence has a chapter in Scots Cooking called "Shivery bites and sweeties" in which she describes shivery bites as the thing she have to eat to fortify herself for going outside into the icy blast coming off the River Tay after a trip to Dundee Swimming Baths. So not just a West of Scotland thing, but now more likely to be a packet of crisps from the vending machine than a home baked Abernethy biscuit. After trips to the swimming pool with my dad we'd swing by the Bonnyton Café for a bag of chips, and after trips to the swimming pool with school anyone caught eating between getting out of the pool and the next mealtime/playtime would have got the belt. |

*Had* or *used to have*, take your pick. Minor proofreading failure.
