I was starting a new job around the time I was diagnosed with cancer. I had 14 weeks off while having operations and then worked while I could during 6 months of chemo; realistically maybe 60% of a normal workload. I was paid in full during all that time and looking back was extremely lucky. I’ve had one day off ill since though and managed an hour that morning before going to bed. My employer was a private company and its owner brilliant with me

Glad you had an understanding boss, DT.

In education settings it generally doesn't seem to be the case. I recall when I was working as a supply teacher one of the teaching assistants I worked with had informed the department head of a hospital appointment she'd had during the summer break, as a courtesy because it was part of ongoing treatment. Because they recorded it wrongly with the HR department she'd been docked the pay for the whole of the 6 weeks break!

I worked there via thr agency for the autumn term only. It took ages for the HR to sort it out, Pix. She really needed the money too! I was glad to get to the end of my contract and at Xmas move on to pastures new!

Just ssp here when I had my cancer treatment, luckily I only had a month off, and managed to work through all my radiotherapy.

There are remarkably few managers who are prepared to just know the rules well enough to use them to their full extent to minimise a problem. Or even to bend or ignore the rules in order to just do the right thing by a member of staff.

(which also requires knowing the rules well enough)
