Excellent reminiscing! Reminds me of school holiday afternoon drives out with mum and dad. If we were really lucky, visiting Teddy Gray's sweet shop in Bewdley and buying a quarter of sweets to share on the journey home.

All this talk of sweets brings back some memories of when I was little. We used to get a 1/4 of Uncle Joes Mint Balls when the man from the Pru came for his money on a Friday evening.

Ahhhh! They were huge, right? Massive, called jaw breakers in the US apparently. |

I have Googled them and yes, they were the things! Initially, they would be so big, we could barely fit them in our mouths initially. Then they would slowly get smaller.

It wasn't the man from the Pru for us but the man from the Co-op Insurance. Plus Mr Boulter the rent collector who worked for the council, and who filled in the rent book each week. Both men wore trilby hats, I remember. Presumably because they were white-collar workers and thus a cut above the flat cap wearers like my Dad. Though in his 50's Dad did rise to trilby class |

I like "English liquorice" what you call liquorice allsorts here. My dad worked in the Bertie Basset factory making them amongst other sweets for a few years before he retired. |
