As a very small (preschool) child I was made to watch the news footage of the poor starving children with flies on their faces in Biafra because I was a fussy eater. I think the lesson was meant to be that those poor children didn't have anything to eat as a direct consequence of me turning my nose up at mashed potatoes.

I was similarly confused by being told to think about the starving Biafrans and eat my food. My (unspoken) response was to think 'why don't you send them this bloody awful stuff on my plate, then?'

Wasn't this actually a line from a comedy show originally? Tony Hancock, perhaps? A more modern take.... reddit.com |

I think that a lot of us might have said just that, missing the lesson that was being attempted to be taught. We were just too young.

Think I'm right in saying that medecins sans frontiers was set up in response to Biafra. One of the many ways that the world has got better in the last 50 years is the international response to famines and disaster.

I offered to put the mashed potato in an envelope and post it to "the starving children" and would willingly have done so if it meant I never had to be faced with it again

My mother claims I said, "Send it to them, then," but I don't think I did because if I had she'd have killed me for being cheeky.
