It seems unlikely that heavy exercise is really that bad on balance. What I take from this is that it’s perhaps not as strongly beneficial as I would have thought 20 years ago, and that there are some genuine risks that are worth keeping an eye out for.

Since my BP remains resolutely low and my family has minimal history of heart problems, I’m not overly bothered by my abnormally low pulse and moderate postural hypotension when I stand up suddenly. Being nearly 2m tall probably doesn’t help with that!

The study showing that the risk of developing ALS is increased by exercise in genetically vulnerable people opens up the possibility of being able to offer evidence-based advice to individuals or specific groups of people.

I can’t help thinking that the increased risk brought about by doing lots of exercise is still almost certainly less than the increased risk of doing none at all.

And I enjoy it so I think I’m going to stick with it until I keep over from something sudden while I’m still in what appeared to be good health.

Crikey - also as FR seems to be cherry picking, I'll cherry pick some of his cherries :-)

From one of the reports: "Eighteen athletes developed a major arrhythmic event and sudden death occurred in nine—all of whom were cyclists"

We *could* deduce runners therefore are safe from dying (yes, yes I know we absolutely can't)...

Interesting that long term endurance training seems to lead to high blood pressure, for me it's led to the opposite. I used to have close to high blood pressure before I ran, now 17 years of running I either have normal blood pressure right smack bang in the middle, or borderline low pressure on a couple of occasions. Which again suggests there are genetic/personal tendencies at play...

Also on heart arrhythmias, I'd like to see caffeine usage (ie tea or coffee drinking) correlated with them. I know I suffer palpitations from coffee - just one cup, but it took me half my life to figure it out. There are two genes that govern your caffeine responsiveness, one how quicky you metabolise it, and two how much it affects you - good article on it here:

mysportscience.com

of course as the article notes as combined with environmental factors too.

My blood pressure is normal (I have a family history of developing high blood pressure in middle age). I'm disappointed that exercising has not prevented an age-related decrease in my peak expiratory flow rate, from 520 in my early forties to 450 now, still well above average for a woman of my age and height.

The "enjoying it" factor is important too. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that for many of us exercise isn't a chore or a medicine, it's rewarding in its own right.

Virtue may be its own reward, but so is cake.

I should have that printed up on a teatowel and flog it online.

Exactly V'Rap, running is 'fun'. And a release from the day-to-day humdrum.

Do it, Dvorak. I'll buy one!

We all need a hobby, and if it's one we enjoy (mostly!) then on balance I'd take it as a Good Thing anyway, and once you add in the other proven benefits of exercise and a relatively non-sedentary lifestyle, I'm pretty sure I'm going to live for ever..... ( ;-) )

I'm fending off death with a smoothie. Feels pretty good, if I'm honest.

I might be hastening death's arrival with sausage and chips but you can't live forever. :-)
