Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

We used to cook Christmas puddings in our pressure cooker. We use the slow cooker to cook them now.

In my work, we used to diagnose about 2 cases of tapeworm a year (plus a variety of other worms).

Then there were the cases of threadworm/pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) we found every 1-2 weeks. They are difficult to eradicate from a household because of the dispersal of their eggs.
Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, was not uncommon either, although always from people who had visited the subtropics (Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe was a well known source in tourists ;-) ). We'd find the eggs in urine or faeces. On rare occasions we'd see an adult helminth wiggling about ;-) .
It's a good job it isn't breakfast or lunchtime :-p .

[Is that right, Dvorak? I was going to blame the Vegan Mafia, but I'm sure veganism hadn't been invented when I went to the med school lecture that included tapeworms.]

I am all too familiar with threadworms. We even had a song about them when my children were small.

Our slow cooker hasn't been off the shelf in five years.

We use our slow cooker 2 or 3 times a week in autumn/winter (two meals each per pot). I made beef stew this week then put it on the hob for the dumplings to cook. The Sunday roast is nearly always slow cooked nowadays and it makes a great rice pudding.

I use a large, heavy casserole in the oven rather than an actual slow cooker.
