I love my OH's automatic - it's brilliant for driving home after marathons.

Grep, I would offer you my arms in exchange for good knees. But my arms are probably not of serviceable quality; two trapped nerves in three years. Not good when you have bras to fasten.

Oh, jabberknit, I remember a terrible time leaving Windsor Half Marathon many moons ago. I am not a good passenger, so I insisted on driving. I regretted it very very much.

Indeed, quimby, clutch/accelerator/brake-wrangling is not good with very tired legs. I had a similar nightmare journey when I got stuck in a motorway traffic jam in my own non-auto car after the Yorkshire mara a couple of years ago.

But don't autos still use about 50% more fuel and thus all you auto drivers are destroying the planet even more than the rest of us? I had a pretty uncomfortable post-race 80 miles or so one time where I had to stop several times and get out and literally punch my thighs. Don't think an auto would have made a difference. |

Not any longer Dvorak: auto.howstuffworks.com I get over 50mpg out of the Mercedes. It’s hard to believe I’d get more with a manual shift. |

The fun thing about an automatic is how long it takes you to lose the learned clutch depressing thing in emergencies! I've had a few odd moments in the days when we had an automatic. And then you get back in a manual shift... |

Funny thing is how an automatic always seems to be working harder
