They certainly did in 05 and if you were in the VIP area at Tavern on the Green there were (apparently) chaps going around with wireless PDAs providing times to spectators. Mrs a was sure I was going too fast on the fast half............and she was right.

yes, still very excited over in sunny Prague... last warm up races are out of the way, last drinking week away with friends is over and last nig chunk of high mileage training has begun. 16 miles after work on a Tuesday in the run is not fun...

can't wait to get to NY though!

Pretty excited here in in Newcastle/Edinburgh as well. Can't wait for this marathon now. Couple of warm up races to go, attempt at 10k PB on Sunday, then half marathon in Aviemore at Marathon Pace in a couple of weeks, then taper for the marathon....

So ok, what's yer bib number?

Well I've hit an all-time low! Had a re-occuring virus - already done a couple of 20 milers so that's good, but it certainly knocks one's confidence!
Good luck with everyone's training.

Sorry to hear that, NZC. I know the feeling though. I got a wicked sinus infection two months before Boston and felt awful. But I think you'll find your fitness will return in time for the race. As long as you had a decent base prior to the start of your marathon training cycle, you will be fine.

Happy Friday, everyone. As promised, here is a checklist I've used in the past. It can be helpful for those who have not run New York before, and/or any first time marathoners. I will send it in separate posts for hotel, pre-race, race, and post-race. This list excludes any "non-running" related items for your normal travels apart from the marathon.

For the Hotel
Race Confirmation and literature (to pick up bib, etc.)
Bottled Water and sports drink (good time to sample the Gatorade Endurance in the few days before the race)
Pre-Race Meal (if it's hard to find in the states, bring it with you)
Prescription Medications (as needed)
Alarm clock (battery Powered - you never know when the power will go out - famous Seinfeld TV episode about this for the marathon)

Remember too, eat meals on Friday and Saturday that you know you can tolerate. This is not the time to sample the "mystery meat" sold by the street corner vendors, or to see how hot you can take your curry...(part 2 to follow)

New York Checklist (part 2)

For Pre Race (Bus ride and Ft Wadsworth)

Inflatable Cushion (or Sunday NY Times) - to sit on for the few hours before the race
The rest of the NY times (to read while you're sitting on the adverts)
Throwaway clothing for start (be sure to have warm clothing, it can be chilly in the morning)
Bag (to check to finish line. You'll get this at the expo)
ID Tag (for bag)
Body Glide
Pre-race food and drink (save an empty water bottle for "just in case" the porta-loo lines are long)
Plastic Garbage bags (Thick) At least 3. Make good instant rain suits, and keep you warm too.
Small plastic bags (to keep shoes dry if it rains)
Disposable Camera (for pictures at Ft Wadsworth. Stow in Gearcheck bag prior to start)
Sunscreen

Toilet Paper for start area (many of the portable toilets can run out) - grab some from your hotel room.

New York Checklst (part 3)

For the actual Race

Runners Watch
Gloves
Energy Gel Packs
$20 (contingency money) keep in plastic bag pinned to shorts or in pants key pocket
Bib Number
Safety Pins
Handkerchief
Hat
Medical Alert (if necessary)
Race Clothes (shorts, singlet, socks)
Running shoes
Champion Chip for shoe
Sunglasses
Bottle of sports drink (I often carry a 16 oz bottle of gatorade for the start so that I can bypass the first two or so water stations which can be very crowded. Do this only if you've carried one in training too).

New York Checklist (part 4 - last segment)

Post Race

Bag for post-race (this is an extra bag of stuff to leave with Spouse/SO, just in case)
Post-Race clothes (warm stuff, sun sets early)
Towel (just bring one from the hotel)
Camera and Batteries
First Aid basics (Muscle cream, foot powder, ibuprofen)
Notebook/Pen - to record splits, emails of folks you met
Post-Race food/drink (may not hurt to throw an extra power bar in your gear check bag, you don't get a whole lot of food after this race). The $20 contingency money can come in handy too as there will be street corner vendors you can get food and drinks from.

That's it for now. If I come across any other items I may have missed, I'll pass them along. I also have a nice detailed description of the course that has some of the cultural highlights along the way. I'll post that in a few days.

Continued good luck with the training..
Cheers..
