The Saint: Don't leave us hanging, what was their reply?
I listen to music while doing pretty much anything that doesn't command my full attention. E.g. ironing, cooking, most computer games that don't have voice acting. Solo running's just another.

Over the last couple of months I've come back to headphones for longer slower runs after about 4 years of no running with headphones.
Its not something I'd want to do all the time, but it's reopened my eyes (ears?) to why people do it - just zoning out for a while with a happy tune in your ears can mop up the boredom of long monotonous slow miles.
Running plus headphones is something of a cliche these days - I can't imagine a TV programme or film showing a solo hobby runner without headphones as it seems to be the perception that its a necessary requirement.
Races, of course, are completely different matters...

Oh sorry, outright denials naturally, I think they were a bit surprised that the other people in the room also shared my view.

As a ex-headphone wearer I now choose to only wear headphones when running indoors...treadmill stuff.
If I'm outside I like to know what's going on around me and if it's a race I think it's good form as a matter of respect to those who take the time to put on events that we are fully engaged in the race and not switched off from the world.
But that's just my choice...

I'm with Saint on this. I find it interesting that running is 'accepted' as boring by runners and therefore needing music.

I've said it before but I wouldn't be surprised by people saying they have to wear headphones during sex to take their minds off the tedium.

Surely it's not that weird to consider not every single run as being the height of fulfilment and interest? I envy you if that is the case!

I don't think it's one extreme or the other. I love running with earphones. I love running without. Depends a lot on where I'm running and my mood.
And yeah - sometimes running is bloody boring and I need the distraction !
I only ever listen to music while running though, and sometimes the lure of a new CD will mean I change my planned route to one that's earphone-safe.

Larkim - I don't think I analyze my run enough to be a highlight or of interest or boring. For me it is training.
There is a reason for everything I do in training and that makes it simple.
