Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Arguably "about time" something was included in the official rule book about this, but no doubt controversial. Now the official rules state that on single carriageway roads where there is no traffic closure, headphones are officially banned. No more leaving it up to the race director to make their own judgement (though they can still make their own judgement in other races).

Not controversial for me as I don't bother with headphones at any time, but I'm sure there will be some opinions about this!

I can't see any problem with that rule at all.

A good rule as far as I am concerned.

When will they introduce snipers to take out these people and those who start in the wrong time pens at big races?

Wrong pen could be accidental but people wearing earphones in races are just a menace, and it should be obvious that on single carriageway roads, wearing them is stupid.

I hope this will mean that marshals/officials start taking numbers and DQ people. Seems that most races have this rule but it isn't enforced.

I suspect fetchies will be more accepting of this rule as a norm, but lots of "mass participation" runners would instinctively object. As with all rules, its in the enforcement of it that the devil lies. There's no point in having the rule if runners aren't routinely DQ'd for this, and once that starts happening either compliance will increase or there'll be a groundswell of opposition which will result in it being reversed.

I take the view that if I enter a race I agree to abide by whatever rules are put in place.

I would suggest that most "mass participation" events are on fully closed roads and therefore exempt from these rules? But notwithstanding that I agree with the sentiment of your post larkim.

Drinking the Devil's Advocaat a moment... runners who use headphones in training might say they need to wear them in the actual event.

It might also be a bit of a surprise to people who routinely listen to ipods etc in the gym, and who see other people out jogging, all apparently wearing headphones to then have someone say 'oi you, get them ears clear'.
