Bought a lot of mine from handtec.co.uk, however if you can get to the VLM expo they’ll almost certainly be doing some deals on the 5

If you’re short on cash surely an old 910xt would be ideal?

My advice would be defo get the Fenix 3 , I love mine , if you think you need the HR then get that version but defo don't bother with the 5 if you are trying "future proof" the biggest failing which I can never understand is they changed the Fenix 5 charging so it can't be charged on the go on your wrist (you can with the 3 version) so the battery life on the 3 is kind of irrelevant as you just carry a little usb charger and after 13/14 hours or so put the watch on the charging cradle and back on your wrist and crack on ...... the Fenix 5 will do the same but you will need to take it off ..............

That is very interesting Gromit, I have been googling and attempting to research what to go for and not had that come up (I'm rubbish at researching, hence why I'm so grateful for everyone's advice) I'll see if I can find a 3 for a decent price, there is only about £40 difference on Amazon! I do like the wrist based HR just for the indication of how much effort I've put in but do I do anything with that information....
GregP not really short on cash, I generally justify what I feel I need (aka want) and ideally it would be watch I could also wear as a watch rather than specific exercise kit especially for holiday times.
Sadly I can't get to the expo I'll look up handtec, thank you flanker

Recommend the Fenix 3 HR, brilliant watch. Battery life is amazing - will cope with 7 hour run easily if fully charged. My only gripe is the inbuilt HR monitor, it doesn't seem very accurate and mine tends to get confused while running and report my cadence as my heart rate. Very odd - it tracks heart rate and then suddenly jumps up to match my cadence and stays there for the rest of the run. Easily solved by getting a HRM-Run strap, which is a great piece of kit. It also gives you access to a bunch of other information, which is surprisingly useful (for me, anyway). So if you get a chance to buy the non-HR version of the F3 at a good price, take it and put the savings towards the chest strap.

I really love the wrist HR on the 235 but I don’t really do anything with the data, I guess the chest strap for the days I’m doing HR training for a reason and it never bothered me using chest strap with the 610 I think it’s the ease!
Found a bargain 3 in the rose gold which started this search when the 235 failed at last years marathon! This is not good for a indecisive libran 😂

I love my fenix 3, and I have a very small wrist. Yes, it's too big, and for that reason I wouldn't go with the optical HR version. But it goes for days without needing to be recharged if I'm only doing ordinary runs, and lasts for a full day of tracking with no problem at all.

do you miss the HR data Drell?
As I've said, HR data tracks, I get VO2 max data with the 235 but other than look and think oh that's good I don't do anything with it. I keep saying I need to train wiser but I don't think I'll ever be stat's focused as long as I see that I'm getting fitter, and part of this is to encourage me to do more swimming/other training and this will allow me to do that and track it. (I am obsessed with training miles and aiming to move this to training time)

Gromit is spot-on about the 5 charging - it's why I've not bought the 5 (I was a serial upgrader beforehand!).
rf - had similar problem with 3HR picking up cadence rather than HR. Seem to recall it was to do with static being created by cheap l/s technical tops! Seen the same with the HRM strap too.
