I once knitted my daughter a pair of full arm length fingerless gloves that she could wear under her school shirt and slip her thumb out and push the hand bits up in class to avoid visible uniform infringements.

Together they were called a twinset. I popped into M&S for some milk and they had rails and rails of jumpers and cardigans. I think all the shops have them this autumn, not sure if they're for going out in though.
