Dad's parents retired to Parkstone in the 60s: we holidayed there often - but there was doubt in my mind whether their beach hut - at Sandbanks, iirc - was theirs, rented, or simply borrowed.

The seafront ones would probably have been rented from the council, or the site was rented but tou put your own hut on it. You have to pay the council in the region of £1500 p.a. for that privilege these days.
