If i open the hatch and find rancid compost I'll put it on the garden anyway, because it's all organic material and I won't be planting directly into that plot for a couple of years.

Sigh
"Rancid Compost" sounds like a session band from an old John Peel show.

Dalek update: Beautiful compost, though the bits of eggshell make it look scruffy. We're planning to retrieve and use the compost at the bottom of both daleks, move them to a sunnier corner of the garden and put all the unrotted material into one. I'm wondering about using one just for leaves.

I’ve used two methods for composting leaves. One is to put them in an open chicken wire container, and the other is to put them in black plastic waste bags having wetted them first. Tie up the bags and put them somewhere out of the way.
I’ve tried both methods and they both work to a degree, but they take a long time to break down.
Last year’s leaf bags are starting to break down so I might have to put the contents in some tougher spare compost bags.
If you have a lot of broad leaves they break down better if they are shredded or cut up, which is a faff but worth doing.

Fizz :-)
I put my leaves in an old builders bag. But they’re well out of sight behind the greenhouse. Last year’s leaves have just broken down enough to be tipped into my (shortly to be emptied) tomato pots to finish off over the winter and then I can start to refill the bag. :-)

EvilPixie no need to dig! Plant straight into it in Spring. Plant carrots late so you don't get carrot root fly.
Red Squirrel bike shops! They are always wanting to get rid of bike boxes.

We don’t add egg shells to compost anymore, take too long to break down and look scruffy as V’rap says.
