They seed themselves very readily; once you have a few, more are sure to come up in subsequent years.

Thanks for the poached egg plant idea, hopefully I’ll remember next year to sow some

Do the poached egg plants exude a chemical into the ground stopping larvae and beetles over wintering, or is it that they attract pest predators which reduce the numbers of larvae?
The plants might be an idea for my asparagus patch to stop the asparagus beetles overwintering in the ground. I'd have to weigh up the advantages against the possibility of the plants swamping the asparagus, and also allowing weeds to grow unseen.
I might try planting basil among the asparagus, or even plant tomatoes although the latter is unlikely since I don't like tomatoes.

I have been led to believe they stop overwintering by some chemical they release. Should work amon the asparagus?

Thanks for the tip, Hann. After some reading in the winter, I removed all the leaf mould (which I'd left in the hope of soil enrichment) to remove larvae/eggs/whatever. Didn't work, apparently.
In better news, my late planted potatoes (start of June) are showing well. Although nothing like the field I passed the other day where the shaws were over three foot high. And, for a field, surprisingly densely planted.

There are a million things I want to get done in the garden today and every time I turn around I see another job. But my back is complaining already so I have to stop. It’s so frustrating

But trying to look on the bright side. This arrived this week so at least when I’m forced to stop I can stop on this
