Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Lucky you! :)
I have spent many hours today propping, pruning, chopping, deadheading, rescuing from underneath grass etc and weeded 2 wheelbarrows in the herb labyrinth.
I have a vase full of rescues and things are looking a bit better this evening. Just come inside!

Fragile Do Not Bend
This afternoon saw me crouching on the ground hunting for sawfly larvae after I saw a few stripped leaves on one of my redcurrants. I put the ones I found on top of the post that the bird feeders hang off, along with a small white butterfly caterpillar (I think) which was also on the redcurrant, but the birds were far more interested in the seeds. 🙄

The leaves are disappearing on one of my redcurrants, and a gooseberry. Last year, the gooseberry was pretty much stripped. Two years ago, the fruit was very poor (small and mildewy); last year it was pretty much non-existent. The bush, and its neighbour, which was less badly affected, but just as disappointing for fruit, may have to go.

ION, it has been raining for several hours. On this occasion, I'm mainly pleased. The garden, particularly a lawn, needed it, as did the water bucket.

They are sawfly Dvorak. Try planting poached egg plants underneath, it dot rid of mine! It stops them from over-wintering in the soil.

When I had gooseberries in my garden at home I'd spend time picking all the sawfly off if I noticed any. I like the poached egg plant suggestion.

That's very interesting about the poached-egg plants, Hanneke. I have two gooseberry bushes, and both have been affected by sawfly the last three years, though still bore fruit and survived. I have poached-egg plants here and there, as I have read that they encourage pollinators; I'll make a point of putting some under the gooseberry bushes in future.
