Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Fox and cubs - thank you, it's good to have a name to put to the plant. Yes, seeds all over the place and sends runners underground as well.

Birds seem to like redcurrants but leave blackcurrants alone. This suits me. I find redcurrants a bit unexciting, but blackcurrants make a lovely crumble. In the previous house we had ducks and chickens in a large enclosure where there was also a redcurrant bush. One of the hens used to love the redcurrants. When she'd eaten all the ones she could reach easily, we used to see her standing under the bush, jumping up to the branches just above head height and snapping her beak on them.

Those caterpillar webs are really bizarre.

Ladybird larvae really are effective against aphids: I know this but am always surprised at how many aphids a couple of larvae will get through in a day or so. I bought some for my roses and two larvae have demolished about 50 aphids in just over a day.

I'm impressed that you have a detailed count of your aphids.

First of my very late-planted seed potatoes are showing (some still left to go in :-o ) and eaten the first couple of strawberries, admittedly from the greenhouse.

Fruit so heavy on some branches, I may have to prop my redcurrants up.

Ha - it just looked like at least 50 as the stem was covered with the buggers!

After 3 days baking hot sun the rest of my tomato seeds have sprouted!!
I remember they did this last year now - some germinated within a couple of weeks, and then nothing else until just after those were big enough to need potting on, then the second load germinated! All from the same sowing.

I’m finding that my homemade compost still contains a lot of viable tomato seeds :)

Cleared away some of the long flowering grasses growing as weeds where I don't want them... And oh dear, the hayfever season has started.

Yeah! My eyes are permanently gunked up. People probably think I don't wash my face in the morning!

I am however only 2 beds short of "on top of the veg and soft fruit garden" :)

Just sown some more spinach. Don't seem to be able to frow any this year! And spent an exorbitant amount of time watering! We are due a Thunderstorm on Wednesday. Fingers crossed! It is so very dry! Been watering my newly planted cucurbits and brassicas, as well as my lettuces.

I've had a couple of magpies sunbathing(?) on the astroturf in the sunniest spot in the garden which I spotted from my sewing room the other day but one has taken a liking to pecking at the window frame on my wooden shed. Can anyone suggest a way of discouraging them?
